watch out for this craigs list scam
i got this guy asking me to sell him my 1959 organ.he says instead of sending you a personal check which can bounce..ill send you a cashiers check with your name on it.so please give me your address, zip code and i will send it out right away.and can i add 150.00 more so you can pay the movers when they show up because im in my 70's. so i did a google search on -craigslist asking me to put check in bank- and BANG !!..it came up with numerous posts of poor people being taken for hundreds of dollars..now i dont post much on craigys..so i hadnt heard of this one,but i had a feeling it was nt right..so i wrote him back asking him if it would be easier if i just gave him my bank account numbers so he could just deposit it that way to make it easier...lmao..the guy wont leave me alone...haaaaa..im just playing with him now,,its fun..finally the scammer gets a run around..does he think im that stupid to give him my bank account info?..omg !!..it so fun.. i guess the scam works were once you deposit the check he stops payment on it and picks the money up that is being held on the account..in with case is the person whos account it goes into..where as you go to deposit a check and they hold your money till it clears..before it clears he goes down and stops payment and gets the money.watch out people..there getting creative now adays.

never "cash" a check for anyone, regardless of Craigs List or anything else.

There are some dangers with some money order scams. 1. They send a MO for more then the cost...claim it's a third party that owes them money and ask you to send back the difference, usually by western union..... it takes about 3 weeks for the cashier's check or MO to makes it's way through the system and when it does it bounces and you're out the money you sent and the product if you sent it too.... 2. The check bounces after you cash it and the bank comes after you and you also get prosecuted if there is not enough money in your account to cover it, for depositing/cashing a fraudulent check..... When I deal on craigslist, I ask for cash and do the deals in person only.

Perfect timing Charlie, I have been fumbling around on CL which I never do checking out vehicles. I think there are more scams there than I have ever heard about in my life. I mean about ever other add in major cities is a scam. Everytime you check on one contact is only through email and paid through paypal or by check. I always think about Chris Hansen on dateline as I read each one. The individual is Always in a situation wherre they cant speak, you cant see the product, they will send a rep or courier to pick it up, .... blah blah blah. Amazing and I feel for those that will fall for this. Just frustrating LOL

I run a business and people have tried to scam me several times unsuccessfully. 2 brief stories to heed. I got a call from one of the operators for the deaf. seems a man wanted to buy 200 smoke detectors from me through this service. He would issue a PO and have a FedEx pick them up from me. He did not want me to ship them to him..... hummmmm.... I said NO. I told him I'd take a company check and after it cleared I would ship the product in the allotted 30 day window by law.... never heard from him again. second story.... Someone contacted me from Soundclick, raving about my "wonderful music" and would like to buy 20 CD's from me. (email contact) I replied back I'd be happy to send 20, glad she liked the music, and how much it would be including shipping. ($300) She responds that she'll send me a bank check for $500 since she just received it and didn't have an account set up, and she trusts me to western union the $200 back to her...... I replied, asking if she thought I was born yesterday and this sounded like a scam and I'd probably never hear from her again...and I didn't. And I can't begin to tell you how many "Nigerian" letters and email's I have received. Some people actually fall for this stuff. NOTE: some people take great pleasure in scamming the scammers..... they end up playing the players and the stories are so cool. The process is called scambaiting..... http://www.419eater.com/index.php some of these people are really creative in how they bait the scammers.

I too have had someone contact me on Craigslist offering a 3rd party check for over the amount if I would give him the cash for the amount over. He said he couldn't cash the check because he didn't have a bank account. I emailed back and told him that I would be happy to do so if he would meet me at the bank where my wife worked and we would verify the funds in the account which the check was drawn on before we deposited the check into my account. Then, I said, I would gladly give him the merchandise and the cash back from the overage after the check cleared. Oddly I did not recevie a reply.

The most obvious ones that yuo receive If you do advertise something for sale on CL is the terse email "is it still available".... I mean if they don't have the energy to at least look up the item name and substitute it for "it" then to heck with them ..

chuckebaby, Googling wasn't necessary. This is from the CL website, and they pretty much force you to read it every time you post or reply to an ad. You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules: - DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts on craigslist.
- NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
- FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
- CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
- NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
- AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.
- DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR, OR PURCHASE EXPENSIVE ITEMS SIGHT-UNSEEN - in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent and that cheap item does not exist.
- DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT CHECKS OR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR A JOB OR FOR HOUSING UNTIL YOU HAVE MET THE INTERVIEWER OR LANDLORD/AGENT IN PERSON.

I have listed gear for sale on Craigslist several times. I have received emails from people like the following: "Hi I really want the Behringer midi controller. I'll pay you $50 more than you are asking. I am currently travelling in Asia but really want the thing. I will have a friend drop by to pick it up and he will give you a cashiers check for it. Give me your address." Or the familiar: "I want to buy the Mpower interface. Please ship it to me by UPS COD for cashiers check. Here is my address." My ads now say "Cash sale only face to face" And I never invite the person to my home. Recently in Houston a man was dumb enough to post an ad for jewelry and invited a respondent to come to his home to check it out. A young couple came to his house to look at an engagement ring. They looked like nice people. The girl said she liked the ring and wanted it. The guy says let me get the money out of my car. He came back to the door without any money. He did remember to bring a pistol and two of his friends that were waiting in another car. The guy and his wife had a very bad afternoon being tied up, pistol whipped and the house ransacked. Be very very careful
