Help making a backing track with sonar home studio 7xl ( reverse engineering a song!)

I am trying to import an audio track (song).   Make a click track that matches the song tempo.  And then record parts like organ, piano, etc.  once I have the tracks recorded that I want,  mute out the original song and use the recorded instruments and click track as a backing track.

I  have home studio 7xl and not having much luck figuring out how to accomplish this.

Running WinXP and extigy on a sager laptop with plenty of horse power.  Yes. I know the extigy is not the greatest.  Looking to upgrade to some multi track audio in the near future with 4-8 tracks I/O.

Any help with my current problem.   So far I have been spinning my wheels.  I’m not a cakewalk Guru but the help files seem lacking in this area.

Thanks!
Wayne

    Hi Wayne,
you're not really telling us what you're not able to do, tho.  you just said you don't have any luck figuring out how to accomplish it.  what have you been able to accomplish and what have you NOT been able to accomplish?

one alternate I would suggest to you is to look for MIDI files on the internet of the song.  there are a lot of MIDI files already created for a lot of songs.

Hi..What I am Not able to do is figure out how to have the tempo "match " the song .

I've read about making an audio track a groove clip but haven't had any luck...  it won't let me do it.  I've tried tempo tap but nothing changes...

I'd like to get the tempo to match the song...      lets start there!
    Thanks

Alot of songs have small tempo changes going from verse to chorus for example, The quick and dirty way would be to work out each sections tempo by trial and error, (it really doesn't take that long) get the firts beat of the track to match the first beat of your track, adjust your tempo until you are "in the pocket" of the beat, only worry about the start, get it right, then move to the next part of the song and so on,

Your tempo track may end up doing something that goes from say 120 at the start - to 118 in the verse - to 120 for the bridge - and 122 for the chorus

Something that has worked for me in the past is the free BPM analyzer from MixMeister, I think they're called. Don't have the link anymore, but you can google it.
You load the song in BPM A and it will give you a reading; enter that BPM in SONAR, import the song, drag the audio track to where the beats of the song match SONAR's metronome beats. It's usually pretty close.

OK..  THE BPM Calculator is cool.. but  over time it's out.   which leaves us to Freex's sugestion to adjust time.
when ever i adjust the time.. the whole song goes faster or slower...   i mean  .. it audibly slows down..   rather than the beat changing.. ( my goal is to have the metronome match the song...  not have the song speed up or slow down to what ever sonar decides.

The help files are like you have to be psychic...  it does not cover any of the stuff on audio stretching or the details of audio clip properties.

How to I get the beats per minute to change ( have the time line and metronome speed up or slow down)  and make sonar leave the actual timing of my audio file alone...???

Well, you could change the tempo first, then import the song.
What song is it? If it's a popular song, or a song from a popular artist, there's probably a MIDI file of the song somewhere online, often free.

No offense to anyone.. but what the heck difference is it what song it is???  Does the song title have anything to do with what cakewalk will and won't do?...   seriously!
I know how to look for midi files but that's not what I'm doing.

Evidently what I want to do can't be done with sonar...  Thanks anyway!  Time to look at Ableton Live I guess...

What you want to do can and in a very short time, usually I find that the weak link lies between the keyboard and the chair.

Check your clip properties and make sure that "stretch to tempo" (under groove properties) is not enabled, as really this is the only way that your imported file should be changing speed.

Also even 0.1bpm can make a big difference over the course of a song.

    Oh. You're one of 'them'.
No offense taken, just offering up the simplest method.
The only time I've ever tried what you're trying, the BPM analyzer worked, I matched the tempo and recorded the song.
Plus, knowing what song it is could get you an offer of a MIDI file someone here wrote of that song, or at least what the song's tempo is.
    Good luck!

You can do that with AudioSnap, but you need Sonar Studio or Producer for that feature.
