Snap - by Measure in Track View, by 16th in Piano Roll View
Sonar X1 no longer lets us have separate snap settings for Track View vs Piano Roll View (PRV). This sucks. What is the easiest way to switch from snapping by measure in Track View, and then snapping by 16th in PRV? If it cannot be automatic, can we at least use a keyboard shortcut rather than adjusting snap setting with the mouse?

1) use screensets to switch views, each screenset has its own snap setting 2) use Benstat's Sonar Plus app - sonarplus.co.uk I think, others will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong. Adds the functionality you're looking for plus a bunch more...

1) use screensets to switch views, each screenset has its own snap setting I have a dual-monitor setup, with the piano roll in one window and the track view in the other. I've not use screen sets before; how would that work with a dual-monitor setup like that?

Benstats Sonar plus will allow that or my preferred method is screensets. To use screensets you need to set a variable in the cakewalk.ini file. Preferences->File->Initialization File called IncludeSnapInScreenset=1 That will allow different snap to settings per screenset. Screensets are really powerful. Imagine 10 different independent views of the same project, instantly recalled by a button press and you get the idea. Try this... - Set up you screens how you want them, with PRV snap to set up how you want it.
- Press Ctrl+0. This copies what you've just set up to screenset 10. It may look like nothing has happened.
- Change the snap to settings to something different.
- Now jump between the two by pressing 1 to take you to screenset 1 and 0 take you back to screenset 10 and the changed snap to settings.
If changes are slow disable your floppy disk controller whether you have a floppy or not. (Yes really) Screensets can be set up anyway you want them. Hide tracks, different widgets, views, snap to etc. etc. and switch instantly between them by pressing the corresponding button 1 - 0. They can be locked so changes are forgotten or unlocked they auto remember the changes so there's no need to save them. You can also rename them to something sensible. Once you've got them set the way you want them save the whole thing as a template so you can use them in all your projects. Very, very powerful and useful feature, whether you have one or two (or more monitors).

There is nothing wrong with the other suggestions in this thread (screensets & Benstats helper) but I am working with key bindings myself. (Preferences > Key Bindings) Until they give back separate control, hopefully one of the methods here will help you out.

I tried the screen set approach and that's actually pretty cool. It also lets me toggle between showing the soft synth properties in the second window vs showing the piano roll. Screenset 1 = track view on monitor A, piano roll on monitor B, snap = 16th Screenset 2 = track view on monitor A, synth properties on monitor B, snap = measure I can see this speeding things up a bit. Any more tips on streamlining workflow with screensets? This is the first time I've used them!

I tried Sonar Plus as well, after reading its feature list. It handles the bit bridge issue (where 32-bit synths were always on top of sonar windows) as well, which is a bonus. Thanks for the tips!

Any more tips on streamlining workflow with screensets? This is the first time I've used them! If you use both MIDI and Audio but like to keep a separate view on both set up 2 screensets and in one hide all the MIDI tracks, in the other hide all the Audio. Then you can jump between the two. You can also set up different zoom levels on say a PRV and/or a track view in different screensets and jump between them. Set up two console views, one just busses, one just tracks jump between them. I could go on & on. IMHO the only limitation of screensets is your imagination. They are great. I love 'em - in case you haven't noticed.

I will probably start playing with screensets at some time tho until I have dual monitors, I don't see a need other than the snap... ;-) I saw that they had removed snap persist from the screensets and thought that was anti-productive. I'm glad to hear that they left it available via the ini file settings... Much apprecaite the info... Thanks... Keni

No probs Keni, you may have noticed I'm a bit of a fan of screensets. Useful for lots of things as well as snap to changes. Another great use is for jumping from buss to track view in either the console or TV, or separating MIDI tracks from Audio 'cos they remember which tracks are hidden as well.

Are there any videos of people using screensets to work on songs? I'd love to see how people use Sonar to work on music, beyond the tech-demo videos that are slanted towards showing off features rather than getting things done.

To use screensets you need to set a variable in the cakewalk.ini file. Preferences->File->Initialization File called IncludeSnapInScreenset=1 Thanks for this FBB. I was certain X1b broke that great functionality of storing this in Screensets and was afraid to bring it up It's nice to see it's an option for those of us that want it.

Trip, This video (Part 1 of 2) is focused on drum production but shows a GREAT use of screen sets during that production. You can download the template for the video with all the screen sets as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZiZjQAxjCw
