Use Multiple Instances of TTS-1 ??

Using SHS7XL.   I have been using external hardware synths for years (Roland JV-30 and Yamaha TG55) but I wanted to try out the software synths in SHS7.  On my first try I inserted TTS-1 twice and then routed the piano, bass and guitar tracks to one TTS-1 and the drums to the second TTS-1.  Worked fine but later I wondered why I used two instances of TTS-1 and tried routing all the midi tracks to one TTS-1.  As far as I can see there is no difference.

I think I initially used two instances of TTS-1 so that I could alter the drum volume independently of the other instruments volume.  But I have found that I can change the volume of just the drums even when all the instruments go through one TTS-1.

So, are there good reasons to use more than one instance of TTS-1 in a project?

--Larry

PS:  I think some of the software synths (e.g. Dimension LE) can handle only one sound at a time so multiple instances of those kinds of synths certainly would make sense.

Only three reasons I can think of, Larry.
The first would be if you need more than 16 instruments.
The second, less obvious, would be if you are getting close to exceeding the voicing limit. This can be adjusted, though.
Some instruments, and multiple notes(ie;chords, overlapping notes) can use several voices at once. If you exceed the limit, you will get "note stealing", where some notes will not sound because their place is being stolen by other notes.
The third would be if you are routing instruments to the four available audio outputs of TTS-1. If you want to apply different effect to individual instruments, you would want a new instance of TTS-1 for every four instruments.

OK, I understand all that.  Back when I was adding my hardware synths I was very much aware of the polyphony limits and note stealing issues.  Since my midi projects are pretty simple, most hardware and software synths work fine for me so I haven't considered those issues.  So far I haven't used the effects built into TTS-1 except where the midi track calls out something like chorus or reverb.

    So, thanks for the feedback.

I think you have Session Drummer 2, don't you? I think it sounds better than the TTS-1 drums.

No Session Drummer that I can find.  I do have Studio Instruments Drum Kit.  I'll check that out.

Studio Instruments Drums are much better and more flexible than TTS-1 for drums.  check it out, it's well worth the effort.

and for your question about multiple instances, these guys are right, most of the time 1 instance of TTS-1 is enough, but you're also right, the ones that are not multichannel like dimle you would need to insert a new instance for each channel you wanted to use.

also, don't forget about the power of drum maps!  check out my tutorial on drum maps on my website for creating drums from different softsynths using one MIDI track and other flexible options!

Just for fun I used one TTS-1 in a midi that had 15 tracks with lots of stuff going on.  I noticed that the polyphony topped out at something like 48.  I looked around and found the setting to increase the polyphony and set it to something like 80.  I ran the midi again and it got up to 56.

About the SI-Drums -- it looks to me that it only includes standard drum kits, no "percussion" instruments like congas, bongos, agogos, etc.  Is that right?

    That's correct.
Just the standard kit, but it is mapped to GM.
There is a drum map for SI Drums, way down at the bottom of the list when you insert a new drum map, if you want to use it.

Beagle,  I tried to find your tutorial on drum maps.  Couldn't find it.
How about a hint on where it is on your website?

    Hey, Larry,
sorry but my computer died and I've not been on the forums much the last few days.

and I can't get to my website from work to give you a direct link, but I will try to remember to do that when I get home.

if you're adventerous, it's in the RECORDING HELP then CAKEWALK HELP or something similar.  but you have to scroll through several screens of "NEXT" to get to the drum maps.  I have plans to make these more easily accessable through menus but haven't had time to do that yet.

Beagle,  I went through all the Recording Help>Cakewalk Tips pages.  Pg 11 says it's the end of the tips and tutorials but a drum map tutorial may appear in the future.
Maybe the future is not here yet?

    --Larry

PS:  I use Firefox and found that many of the Cakewalk Tips pages rendered better with IE8.  Just in case you run out of things to do.......

hmm - I thought I had put it on there, but maybe not.

I'll check it as soon as I can.  I've got it on an alternate site, let me see if I can find it on the alt site.
