Creating custom monitor mixes ?

Hi guys

I havent got a rround to doing live band recording but that time is going to come very soon now and I am going to start to be asked for more of me etc in the headphones and all that carry on

I know with the Octa-Capture you can have 4 monitor mixes thats a awesome Idea but I am not able to buy one just yet.

How do you guys go around doing this with the VS-700 anyway to get a different mix for each member of a band ?

Thanks to all

To be honest, I've been getting away with the band having one mix for live recordings. I send a feed to the headphone amp and they're able to turn the overall volume up and down as they want it for each headphone. With the unit I've got, (Samsons S-Amp) there is an aux input there which I could use to send an additional signal to them from Sonars mixer (vocals, gtr, bass etc). If the mix is pretty much balanced you shouldn't have too many complaints.

    Yeah thats what I thought

I am hopeing to get away with just one mix and individual volume control for each player

I just wonder how often I am oging to get some one who isnt happy it owuld be a pain to have 5 people in and all are happy apart from one

I guess I just dont want to get hit with that problem as I wouldnt know how to aproch it apart from a polite get to F**k out my Studio :P but then again that would get me a bad name so dont want that haha

I've done a band that played live and they compromised and found a mix that would suit everyone. They were happy...

I was actualy wondering if there was a way I could use a Jab hub and send out puts to that then let the band do there own mix from that

I am not sure how this would work though

I can't see why the jam hub wouldn't work, if fact that seems like an awesome idea.

Behringer are bringing out these units in the summer I think and I have to take my hat of to them, I'm quite impressed by these

Hi Jon Thanks for the Reply !

I thought it would be an Idea to do it that way ! I had seen the Behringer system but the jam hub actuly works out cheeper to do.

I am trying to think how I would make sonar send it all out to the Jam hub but keep my own mix.

I am not at my Daw to even go have a look any ideas how this would be done ?

    Thanks for your reply

Depending on if your system can handle it, you can make a send on whatever track that needs to be monitored and send it to one of the outputs of the 700r...this requires using input echo. Assign that output to a single monitor mix..Add another send to another output if someone else needs to hear the same channel. This means you will have to turn your asio audio buffer size down to more real time than performance... This will get rid of latency.. Always remember that running some effects like real space will cause latency ,so make sure to cut those off while recording.. Not all of your available reverbs do this and not all effects cause this but some do. Adjust the send to the output and run it to a headphone amp or whatever you have to split up for multiple headphones monitors. Once again if your computer can handle it you can have up to 10 headphone mixes per v700r... The only issue I have is a small amount of fan noise in this method...Its also good to listen on the headphones yourself because running input echo will automatically put what ever track you assign it to in your mains.

The system is picking up a slight high pitch squeal from somewhere. It's not in any of the recordings mind you, but its a slight distraction in the headphones using input echo...It's popular belief its the fan in the 700r itself

No... not at all ... I'm talking about using the  10 outputs via the back of the 700r...using each one for a separate headphone mix..

Same here with 2 headphone outs on the VS-700c

I will let you knwo how I get on with useing the out puts if I come across any noise that shouldnt be there.

What headphone amp are you useing ?

behringer powerplay pro-xl...(very inexpensive) its not the greatest but gets the job done...... running the individual outputs from the 700 to the front aux ins on the amp that way i can still keep my sub groups attached in the rear if needed plus you have several headphone outs per channel...oh yeah its a four channel headphone amp

I also forgot to mention that to use this monitoring method you need to check the output drivers in the audio settings for how many outputs your going to need...remember that they are in stereo so left is one right is 2 and so on
