What instruments do you already know? As a guitarist, i found that smaller-neck basses would be a good start. Ibanez Soundgears were a comfortable transition. A Mexican Fender is good too, it's a common size and a strong cost/quality balance. Yamahas aren't bad either. If there's a bigger music store in London (there was one on King St or York St, but might have recently closed down), go in and try a bunch.

trimph1 I'm just digging around for ideas here... Fender Squire P Bass? I bought one on ebay (made in Indonesia) and put on a set of GHS strings. I know it is not the best bass, but it is easy to play. I play it poorly, but I play it poorly with ease.

Me, too. Got the Squire Bass Pack a few years ago, just so I could have a bass. Works great and sounds okay, too.

I know somebody that is learning to play on an Alembic. Jus' sayin' I very nearly bought myself a 'clunker' PB copy for £45 the other day from a 2nd hand shop just to lay down a few lines. The neck was straight enough and it was set-up OK had I had the cash on me I'd have probably sprung for it as a disposable item.

I bought mine at a Pawn Shop. Spent $75 bucks, so I don't feel bad if I never play it again.

Yeah that was what I was kind of thinking about..what with my stumpy fingers... I play more keyboards, synths and some guitar...my main instrument so far has been my sax...

Did I mention commision? Of course any gratuities on top of that are at your discretion.

(Which is rarely ever a desirable event...) Just trying to reduce any potential cleanup messes here in the CH.

I searched for quite a while and played a bunch of basses. The one I got was a Yamaha RBX 170 for, you guessed it, $170. It has a great tone and is much better than doing the keyboard/ Soft Synth thing. Easy to play too. Hope this helps.

That seems like a good deal bill. Does it have the requisite Am string though?

Looking for a good bass for learning bass playing. Here you go: Dog and hat are extra. You can have The Bapu for free. All he ever plays is that damnable Am note.

I'd imagine one problem when shopping for a bass at a music store is the near total absence of anything that resembles a bass amp. :-)
