Starup Gear / Troubles with onboard sound card

Hey guys, for years I've been playing just to play. I've decided to take the next step and start working with digital production. Being new to all this I seek input as to what gear I have "left" to make this a complete home studio station.

Currently I am running:
Toshiba Qosimio x505
Windows 7 64-bit
Intel Core i7 CPU Q720 @1.6GHz
6 gigs of ram
Conexant Pebble HD SmartAudio
Sonar X1 Producer
Cakewalk A-500 Pro

The reason I highlighted my soundcard in red is on the assumption to why my latency is so high while running decent quality audio settings. I'm almost positive I need an external audio interface. Cakewalk stated Conexant is only for listening to general media and not for professional recording. So, my goal is not to get something that I already have out of what I have listed above. Please give me suggestions as to what audio interfaces I should get, as well as any other gear you guys could come up with. Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum!

The integrated soundchips, no matter what brand, are never capable of fluent DAW work. So you always need to get a soundcard for the job, internal or external.
A forumite named Beagle has many  soundcard suggestions on his website.
In case you're about to record some real sounds (like vocals) you need a microphone as well.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Awesome Kalle, I visited Beagles' site and found his recommendation spreadsheets very helpful. After review of some equipment he recommends, I plan on purchasing an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/M-Audio-Fast-Track-Ultra-USB-2.0-Audio-Interface?sku=241806
and the MXL 990/993 Studio Package (http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-MXL-990-993-Studio-Microphone-Package?sku=273168)

But of course I'd like to see if anyone has better suggestions and/or bad experiences with this equipment before I purchase it. I'm not entirely after starter equipment but at the same time not after top of the line studio hardware. I believe these would be good for what I'm after. Again, your help is very appreciated!

    Hiya and welcome,
I am using the MAudio FTU which I use for personal work and recording entire 5 man bands.  It is very user friendly and NO Latency problems for me. Pretty much PlugNPlay after downloading the current driver. Very nice unit and cheap price wise. One thing I would recommend is getting it through Sweetwater so you have coverage-MAudio gives you one complimentary Service Order but after that, you have to purchase a number just to contact them, Sweetwater GIVES you 2 year free warranty with it-NICE
