Proteus VX plugin works in X1!
Hi, guys, Just stumbled upon how to get the free E-mu Proteus VX plugin to work in Sonar X1 on Windows 7 computer. Create a Proteus VX setup folder on the C drive. Put the setup program in that folder and unzip. Install VX. This is where it gets tricky. Those of you who know how to install the samples, do as usual. They have to be in the Creative Professional/ e-mu Sound Central folder in Program files. My problem was the installation for VX worked great but it would not load the libraries. It said it was not a valid Proteus bank. Now, follow closely. Make sure that you created a Proteus shortcut on your desktop. Right click on the desktop Proteus icon. Run the troubleshooter to find problems with running Proteus. It will come back as run it as compatible with XP service pack 2. Click start program. Then try to load the bank again. It should load right up!. Close Proteus and the compatibility window should be there. Click next. Close the window. Click on Proteus icon on your desktop to run as standalone. Just to make sure it works. If all is well. Close it. Go to your Sonar plugin manager and scan. Viola! Mine loads and sounds like a million bucks. I hope this helps someone out there. While the sounds are a little dated, this is a fine plugin just to have in your arsenal. Again, I can't garauntee that this will work for you, but it worked great for me. Good luck! If you are looking for the free Proteus VX download it is over on audiofanzine.com.

I forgot to clarify that Proteus VX is only working in the 32 bit X1 version. May be a problem with bitbridge. Possibly JBridge could fix that. Sorry, but I hope this info helps someone who wants to use this free plug.

Hi Sidroe, I've tried this a number of times and always failed. Is your Windows7 32bit? I don't think Proteus will work at all on a 64bit version of Windows7. If it worked for you, I'll install the 32bit version of X-1 and try again. Thanks for the research!

My machine is an Asus 64 bit Windows 7 with 12 gigs of RAM. Bought right off the shelf from Best Buy. My interface is a MOTU 24i/o. Please read the installation very closely. I'm just as interested to find if this works for someone else. I tried it in both Sonar X1 32 bit and 8.5.3 32 bit. It works flawlessly. Good luck.

If it is any help, I also had Administrator turned on. So it prompts you for the install and the actual launch of Proteus. If you use the standalone it will automatically load the last bank. The VST version only launches Proteus. You have to manually load the bank and sounds. That is the one drawback.

I have used Proteus VX with succes on Windows 7 64 bit, but for now I can only confirm it does work with X1 32 bit. I did not try to use it with X1 64 bit yet (busy testing other plug-ins first). Proteus VX is a realy nice free (ESC) sample player. It is possible to configure multi-outputs, so you can use a lot of sounds/samples at the same time. I got a bunch of ESC sample discs with the E-MU 0404 pci (but using a ESI Juli@ in my main computer now). Those samples where for use with the Proteus X2, but are also usable in Proteus VX (Proteus X2 does NOT work in Vista/Windows 7 - so that leaves me with Proteus VX only). The only sample disc not usable is the Studio Grand, because these are streaming (big) samples that are not supported by Proteus VX. Also included with the 0404 where the Mo'Phatt, Protean Drums and Planet Earth X sample discs, but the protection of those discs does NOT work in Windows7 64 bit, so you can not authenticate and use the samples. These discs DO work on Windows7 32 bit tough.. Oh - and for the sound banks - you can automatically load the last used bank. You can also make your own bank, by selecting sounds/samples and save the collection with a unique bank name. If you let this new crated bank load automatically you always have your self made selection at hand.

The standalone does work on my Windows 7 64 bit Acer. Loads automatically and all. No problems. Am I understanding that you do not have the library of sounds that came with VX? That should have come in the free download package.

The download version has a sound library that is a compilation of the library cd's (Xperience, Beat shop one, X Producer, Studio Grand and the earlier named protected library disks). I also got a Library CD (Xboard Performer) with my trusty E-MU Xboard61 (relatively cheap keyboard with after touch - sadly out of production now). So - while I can use the download library, there is really no need to do so, because I already have all the sounds in the library..

I've got this plugin too. Some of the sounds are much better than their DimPro Proteus Pack counterparts.

I'm on Windows 7 64bit here and I can confirm that Proteus is working fine in standalone mode, and in X1 32bit, but not in 64bit X1. JoeHans Can't get this loaded in Sonar X1. Any tricks left? JoeHans - Is it working in standalone mode? Have you scanned/rescanned the folder in which the .dll is located?

Yes, it's working perfectly fine in stand alone mode and I've tried to rescan the plug-in folder many times.

See this post http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1868754 If you want to use VX in 64 bit it could be worth a try. I no longer have it installed I was having issues wit VX dialogue boxes being hidden under other windows and it was frustrating. Things may be different with X1 and the latest versions of JBridge.

I'm using Proteus VX on X1c 64-bit and have done on nearly every previous incarnation of X1, under Windows 7 x64. It would only work under jBridge though. With BitBridge it simply displayed a blank window and wouldn't make a peep!

I guess I will finally breakdown and get JBridge. It seems like it is doing a great job of getting those older forgotten plugs to function.
