Waveform drawing with external instrument... HOW TO DO IT - READ!
Well, I'm just curious - are Cakewalk programists and developers SOFTWARE ORIENTED only? Or maybe - they "KNOW BETTER", what WE want in serious and creative-oriented DAW software? CASE: I use some hardware synths and instruments To play hardware synths I use MIDI tracks (quite normal) I use audio tracks only for MIXING those external synths I WANT TO SEE waveforms of INCOMING AUDIO on audio tracks while PLAYING (echo on) I WANT THEM to work the same way as audio tracks in SOFTSYNTHS Do I want too much? HOW TO DO IT: 1. - create VST SYNTH MIDI and AUDIO tracks - don't create a folder 2. - you see "waveform drawing" button on this audio track? OK 3. - change this track input to any inputs of your interface - to which your synth (or any audio gear) s connected 4. - as you can see - "waveform drawing" button disappars, you have ECHO ON/OFF button instead 5. - so turn ECHO ON 6. - turn "play" on, and start to play 7. - YEAH, you can see waveform of incoming signal!!!! FUNNY THING: If you CLONE vst synth AUDIO track and do steps 3 to 7 from above - you get the sae result NOT SO FUNNY: - If you clone - let's name it - "external instrument track" prepared as above - wavedrawing ability DISAPEARS. - If you write as template - previously prepared "external instrument track" - after loading template - wavedrawing ability DISAPEARS. - So - I ask you one more time - what were they think about when they was thinking about make our musicmaking easier and more friendly? Why to get simple result I have to do so complicated work? Why there IS NOT wavedrawing of incoming sgnal, why there IS NOT "external audio"-dedicated tracks or "external synths"-dedicated tracks - SIMILAR to "VST tracks"???? And finally - WHY the **** GAIN on empty audio tracks doesn't work as GAIN at all? It works only like "final TRIM" and affects level of recorded audio????

WOW ! calm down and eat a cookie or something. Your blood sugar level must be getting low . . . (lol) You found a work around. Congratulations ! Be Happy, Don't Worry. LOL. Actually you should probably fill out a bug report, or maybe a feature request, or maybe both ! I wouldn't call Cakewalk's programmers and developers idiots. They aren't. What's more likely to happen when you do is they will show YOU how YOU made a mistake and caused said behavior yourself, and not X1 !! }:?)

Wilqen - we have pretty sunny day here, so I'm not angry, but curious, because there are zilions of people using hardware together with software, and Cakewalk is one of it's kind - doesn't listen to the people. I was posting "bugs" and "wishlist" several times. And I got pretty funy answers, even from the users. - "what for GAIN? use compressor to increase incoming signal level or change interface" (LOL!) - "external instrument channel similar to VST softsynth channel? What for?" (megaLOL) By accident I discovered how to mak one of "improovements" thet have to be in standard.

I like your "improvement" your right it should be made standard. Since it's raining here, and cold, maybe I'm the "angry guy" and I didn't realize it. lol !! Happy music making Adrian !! Best wishes, Will

No problemo :) If I work with hardware synths, all i need is MIDI for playing notes and do some "knob-o-logy", audio automatisation I used to do on audio tracks. That's why I hardly think, that WAVEDRAWING of incoming audio signal and "EXTERNAL SYNTH" tracks ahould be OBVIOUS FEATURE of such advanced DAW like Sonar. To see - where to place i.e. VOL fade, EFX ON/OFF or something I want to do. Imagine situation, when you have to re-record your audio just because you changed one note or chord on your MIDI track - hopeless..... But that's the way Cakewalk developers want us to do... Today I'm not making music, just messing arround with some synths, guitars etc.... And because my studio is in basement, I prefer to spend my day in apartment and mostly - outdoor... Maybe I'll make some ambient track or something else.... Later :) Korg Z1 is really inspiring piece of gear, so if I will go to the studio "just for a while, honey", I will propably stay there few hours

Maybe I am missing something but if its really incoming audio wouldn't wave preview work on that track. It would have to be record armed but it should work and in record mode but if its coming in wouldn't that be what you would want?

adrian, I know English isn't your first language but your post is way more harsh than it needs to be - unless you're just stupid - or an idiot. See what I mean?

OK, guys, call me as you want, but for me it's totally stupid to do not put this feature in standard. I can even edit first pot just 4 you, Larry :) But it doesn't excuses Cakewalk guys at all. I can ask questions "what were you think about" when they was thinking about X1, X1a, and - (hope not) finally - X1b. John - please check it out, you don't have to believe my words - THERE IS wavedrawing of incoming audio - just you have to do what I did and what I described in first post. To get simple thing I have to "cheat" software?
