ERIC JOHNSON'S LATEST RELEASE TO GET VINYL TREATMENT:
ERIC JOHNSON'S LATEST RELEASE TO GET VINYL TREATMENT: Eric Johnson's latest release, 'Up Close,' was a long time in the making (five and a half years). But as evidenced by its reception (All Music Guide pointed out that "[Johnson] continues to find interesting ways to hone his specific craft on 'Up Close'") and its impressive list of special guests (Sonny Landreth, Steve Miller, Jimmie Vaughan, and Jonny Lang), the wait was well worth it. Fortunately, fans will not have to wait long at all for a vinyl version of 'Up Close,' which is slated for release on April 19th, via EMI Records and Vortexan Music. The album will be issued on 180 gram vinyl, and housed in a beautiful special double LP gatefold package with printed sleeves. Additionally, 'Up Close' was remastered specially for this vinyl release by Jim Wilson. Johnson has long been considered one of rock's most talented six-string players, as evidenced by his platinum-certified 1990 release, 'Ah Via Musicom," its hit single "Cliffs of Dover," as well as a Grammy Award win for "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" in 1991. Additionally, Johnson graced the cover of the March issue of Guitar Player Magazine, was recently named Guitar International's "Guitarist of the year," and won an unprecedented 33 awards at the Austin Music Awards since 1982, including taking home "Best Electric Guitar," "Best Acoustic Guitar," and "Best Instrumental Band" awards at this year's ceremony. Man , I love Eric Johnson. I grabbed "up close' when it came out. I think his bass player Kyle Brock is amazing and a huge factor in why his better songs sound so good. High Landrons is my favorite flanger tune of all time. Have you heard his tone on the new record? It's still the same but squeezed a bit tighter. Vinyl release eh . ooooh..I really like those guys like him that play behind big names and do studio work then come out and make killer solo records.

A little off topic but if anybody knows of a tune with killer flanger solo that sounds like your getting sucked through an aquaduct I'd love hear some suggestions. I know there's the keep yourself alive, some Pat travers stuff and all the itchycoo park, bold as love, barracuda and status quo stuff. But I've been searching for a real tube sucker of a solo for a while.

well, the first really big song to have that sound, for me, was House Burning Down, off of Electric Ladyland. in fact, i'd fancy a chance to say i bet that was the sound that Johnson was channeling when he recorded High Landrons.

Read the fine print on the album before buying! Johnson has some pretty stringent requirements. 1) Speaker cables may not exceed 3 feet in length. 2) Turntable band must be fabricated of 30% corn husks, 65% unicorn hair, and 5% children's wishes. 3) Turntable must be powerd by alkaline battery with between 72.5% and 74.6% power remaining. 4) User must turn turntable 3 full winds clockwise prior to playing 5) Record must be started with label facing east. 6) Record must be played all the way through on both sides to ensure even wear. 7) Record must not be looked at while playing -- this constitutes measuring which at the quantum level changes the playback results. 8) Record may only be played in a room especially designed by Skywalker sound located in Johnson's basement.

Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!

These all sound like reasonable requirments to me. I think I do pretty much all of this for any record I play.

I just bought this album. At first it just sounded like all the usual Eric Johnson to me with his same arppeggio lead licks. But after about the 5th listen it took hold of me and I can't quit listening to it. A truly brilliant piece of music. Soooo refreshing to hear high quality new music again.

Listened to almost the entire CD - sounded pretty good on the first run through! It always takes a few listens before you can really get into all the songs though...
