audio drum to midi?
I'm looking of a way to convert an audio drum track into midi. The audio drum is fairly simple. I am not sure if Sonar can do this or if it best to just use a plugin. I could buy the "drumagog" vst but can Sonar do it without me having to purchase yet another plugin?

Aside from working with Audio Snap, I'm pretty sure V-Vocal does Audio to Midi, but likely not very good with Drums. You would have to experiment a little to find out. I know you didn't want another plug-in or piece of software, but for the record - Toontracks "Drumtracker" does a very good job of this. They actually used it themselves to create a lot of the grooves included with EZ & Superior Drummer kits.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! I have not tried this tool myself but I've seen a couple of posts on other forums that say it works pretty well. It's Massey Plugins' DRT (Drum Replacement Tool (I think)). Although the trial version is somewhat limited in features, it is functional and never expires. It also seems reasonably priced if you do drum replacement often and want the full feature set. Anyways, I'm really interested to find out what method you end up using and how it works out for you.

Steven Slate "Trigger" is designed for this very thing. I have not used it.

Audio snap has worked well for me. In preparation I'll usually clone the original track (say, a snare drum track) for safety, then take the copy and do some editing to make sure the only sound left is the one you want MIDI notes for. You could gate the track then bounce it (so the gate filters out unwanted noise), or hand-edit it. In other words, get your source track as clean as possible (you won't need it after the process) -- then apply Audio snap & copy to MIDI.

well funds are short but all those other external options sound good drumagog DRT toon tracker trigger Unless I can use any of these in demo/trial mode then I'm going to have to stick with audio snap. My first try has so far been disappointment. but I will try your idea pscherer and single out individual drums. A lot slower and tricky but might be worth it.
