Saggy Shure KSM-44 Shock Mount Elastic

Hey,

The elastic that supports the mic in the shock mount for my KSM 44 has somehow gotten stretched and keeps falling off.  Anyone run into this?  Any good remedies?

Thanks.

Heavy duty wide rubber bands in the color of your choice. That's what I use when the original elastic wears out. Works better than the original.

You should be able to order them from Shure. Might also see the ladies hair care section for Scunci brand pony tail elastic bands.  They might be the right size. I use them to bundle up cables. I like the ones that don't have a metal clamp or glue.

    Thanks for the info guys.

It seems a little ironic to have to rely on rubber bands to support a mic that you paid many 100s of dollars for.

    Thanks!

Now here's some good customer service....

Out of curiousity, I called Shure to find out how much replacement elastics would cost and if they were covered under warranty (my KSM44 is only a year or so old).

The woman said that the elastics are 85 cents each (which certainly won't break the bank).  And then she said, she would just send me a couple for free.  I gave her my address and they should be on their way to me tomorrow.  Nice.

The way they handled this is the kind of treatment that keeps customers coming back to a particular manufacturer.

    Good job Shure!

There you go. Best solution yet.

Try that with the Neumann mic company.

That's good to know. My own KSM-44 bands are still as tight as a ... well, still tight. But it's good to know anyway.

These days all the buzz is over boutique mics and Chinese mic mods and mics made out of plumbing components and nobody talks about Shure anymore. But they are still the best quality for the money. Especially for a clumsy oaf like me who keeps knocking over mic stands. I've never managed to break a Shure microphone, or for that matter ever had one fail for any reason.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Dave,

    Thanks for the tip!!

The same thing happened to me with my AT3035, the shockmount's elastic cord broke and after reading your experience, I emailed Audio Technica's customer service to ask for the specifications of the elastic so I can buy one on the internet.
The rep told me that he can mail me the elastic at no cost.

That's great customer service, especially considering that the AT3035 has been discontinued and replaced with the AT2035 and the shockmount for that mics (AT8458) is $74.

    Neumann is owned by Sennheiser.

I own a Sennheiser MKH70 that seemed to die. It's a back up mic for me that mainly lives in a Zeppelin wind enclosure inside a Pelican case. I use my Sennheiser MKH60 or one of My Schoeps MK41s more often.

I sent it to Senny and explained that I had purchased it new 3 years prior and I was willing to pay full price to have it brought back to as new standards. I was mainly concerned with having a 100% tuned mic.

They sent me a brand new MKH70 to replace the one that was having some trouble.

    It pays to ask nicely.

I am a big fan of Shure as well.

    best regards,
    mike
