Storing Sounds in the Inner Ear

I just thought this science blurb on my homepage this morning was interesting.  The link that I am inserting includes the actual abstract from the article.  Essentially, they were able to show using animal models (unfortunately for the guinea pigs) that there is a unknown mechanism that triggers electrochemical signaling after the external, mechanical vibrations stop (or at least that is the way I am interpreting it).

"The after-vibrations appear to be driven by sustained force production in the inner ear -- a form of short-term memory of past stimulations"

… I guess, at least guinea pigs have some sort of built-in bio-chemical delay or sustainer.

Sometimes, when it is really really quite in our area...  I almost imagine that some near distant neighbors are drilling a well.

    "...short-term memory of past stimulations"

That's kind of sad on multiple levels.

… not quite sure if I am reading into your reply correctly but, according to the authors, they used guinea pigs, which leads me to believe that the auditory canal was used to study sound waves and not as an orifice for any sort of hanky-panky (whatever the heck that means) as implied by your comment  “sad on multiple levels” (which I suspect was in response the the authors characterization of the vibrations as “past stimulations”)  … Now, if they had used gerbils that would be a different story altogether.

No, no, no...  Scientists used guinea pigs to store sounds in their inner ears.  Richard Gere stored gerbils in his inner rear.  As you can probably tell, the guinea pigs won that coin flip.

I hear that too.  Then again, I live in Texas and they are drilling wells.
