Sample rate blues

When I plug in a midi device into my PC that has a different sample rate than my open Sonar project, Sonar changes its sample rate to match the midi device.  This messes up some of my previously recorded audio tracks and now they are out of tune with what I am recording via Midi.

Can I force Sonar to hold its ground and not change the sampling rate of my project?

Thanks,

Charley

Charley - MIDI devices don't have sample rates, they are data only.  you'll need to explain more what you're talking about in detail so we can figure out what you're having a problem with.

I take it this is an external hardware synth ?  The only way your external device would change the sample rate of your audio interface if it were attached using a digital audio interface with no digital connection going back to it. That might be the problem. You need to let your sound card or interface be the source of sample rate clock and set the external synth to get clock from the sound card. This will also let Sonar set and change the sample rate as needed.  So for example if you are using SPDIF or ADAT you need to hook up a second cable going the other direction. Even if you don't need audio that direction it carries sample rate clock also.  The other easy way to solve this is to use analog connections to get audio from the synth to the sound card.

The other issue you may have is that the external device can't do the same sample rate as the project and in that case you can't use a digital audio connection and will have to use analog.

What is the make and model of the external midi device and what audio interface do you have ?

For starters, you shouldn't be using your DAW audio interface as the default for windows audio/midi.

    Intel i7 @ 3.60GHz, 12GB DDR3 1600MHz, Win7 / OSX 10.6.6, Sonar 8.53 / Pro Tools 9.0.1, RME RayDAT, UAD2-Quad, Focusrite OctoPre (x4), Euphonix MC Mix, Tascam US2400, Monette Ajna (x2), 15' Macbook Pro

I am using Sonar PE 8.5.3 with Dimension Pro 1.5.  I am running Windows 7 and using an Echo Mia card.

When I plug a Sonuus i2m into the PC via USB, Sonar changes the sampling rate to match the i2m.  Can I prevent that?

OK, that's the problem. The Sonuus counts as a sound card so you have two of them.  It is also limited to 44.1 or 48k at 16bit so if your project is 96k it won't work. It also has no other connections (only USB) so there is no way to make it work with your Echo card.  Even if could get both drivers available using WDM it still won't work because there is no way to get sample rate clock from one device to the other.  Sorry. You can only use one at a time and you have to stick to the sample rate the Sonuus can do when using it.

This is the same problem with USB microphones and guitar adapters, they just don't work in most setups.  You are somehow expected to use only that device. They even started adding a headphone jack to the microphones to try and solve the problem.

Is there a way you can set the control panel for the Sonuus to not try to do the audio and just supply MIDI ?  You could also try unchecking the Sonuus audio driver  in the Sonar audio options.  Does it show up as a MIDI driver in addition to the ASIO driver ?
