Automation - cannot see fader movement..

Hi,
Just wondering why it seems I can only "see" the fader movements etc of the automation I've recorded in offset mode??? Is there a reason for this?? Do you have to keep switching offset mode on every time you need a visual reflection of your automation??? ... I prefer to hide envelopes.

Hmmm, I think that's odd.  You mean like seeing the faders moving re: automation when you play back I think?  That should happen without messing with offset - I've never used that.  --Hiding the envelopes - that's something else I've never done except temporarily so I can focus on the envelope I'm editing.  I would think hiding them shouldn't interfere with the fader movements.

The faders don't move in offset mode.

I'm not trying to be glib but are you sure about when you're in offset mode? The only visible indicator, without checking the Envelope Tool hidden menu, is that underneath the fader in the track inspector the number will have a + sign after it. If you're using the keyboard shortcut, o, you can toggle it on and off very easy but it doesn't show the status the way the menu does.

    Hi Chappel,
Yea, sorry to say I am definitely sure i'm in offset mode. Already double checked it in the menu....

Basically here's what happens.... When Offset mode is OFF, I click the automation write button on a track and move the fader on playback in order to record the automation... When I do that the track switches to OFFSET mode (I check this in the menu)... Then if I turn off OFFSET mode and playback the automation I have recorded the fader does not move.... But when i turn on OFFSET again the fader dafaults to zero and THEN starts to show the automation movements..  : /

I can't get past the idea that enabling a track's write automation is toggling on the Envelope Offset mode. Never seen anything like that happen on my computer and I am unable to duplicate the problem. Which version of Sonar are you using?

Yea well that's what has me stumped too ... Thought it might just be some setting I have wrong. Using Sonar 8 Producer.

Actually, I stand corrected... when offset mode is checked yes you are right the faders don't move... So I guess what I did was...I MIXED the song in offset mode and then when I switched out of it the faders reset to zero. Does that make sense?

So do I need to set the levels and pan again with offset mode turned off and then record my automation (making sure OFFSET is unchecked)... and then I will see all the fader movements etc????

Sorry for all the confusion, my mistake... Also thanks for your help. Hope I have found the problem now...

    From the Help files:

"Any position that you set a fader to in Offset mode remains in effect when you switch back to Envelope mode. For example, if you set a volume fader to -INF while in Offset mode, switch to Envelope mode and drag the fader to its maximum level, you will not hear anything."

That right there is the main reason I never use the Offset Mode. I'm sure there's a reason for the Offset Mode, but I've never seen much use for it and it can complicate things if you're using both Offset and Envelope modes.

If you're asking ME what I think, then, yes, I would suggest you redo all the automation in Envelope Mode because that's what I would do.
