Problems understanding the snap function

Hi all,

I still have problems understanding how the snap function in X1 works. Maybe it's a bug, but sometimes it just doesn't work in the piano roll.

The other day I got it working, I set it to "Snap to eighth notes" and the bars in the piano roll actually snapped to every eighth note when moving around or changing their length, just like I am used to from FL Studio.
But most of the times they move around freely although "Snap to" is activated. The settings are the same but the bars don't snap.

Is there a hidden setting in the piano roll or could this be a bug?

    Check the preferences area and set the magnetism to "off" and see if that helps.

    If you haven't upgraded to X1b yet those settings are per screenset as well so it's possible to have magnetism/snap to on in one screenset & off in another.

    If you want that behaviour in X1b you need to set a variable in the ini file.

    Preferences->File->Intialization File

    IncludeSnapInScreenset=1

    I had the same problem understanding exactly how the Snap To function works in X1.  Make sure that the tab for Ticks (Absolute Time Snap) on the Control Bar is not highlighted.   This will ensure that your edits will strictly follow your Snap To setting.

    Credit to Scott Garrigus on this one.  The Snap To function was driving me nuts until I read in his book about how to properly set it up.

    That was the problem. Thanks a lot!

    Mh... I guess it's not completely solved yet and I think it really may be a bug.
    I started a new project and activated "snap to", but it didn't work, just as I expected.
    So I deactivated magnetism, saved the preferences and reactivated magnetism again like I did in the project before and after that "snap to" worked.

    Subsurf -

    This has happened to me also. It's like, the first time you go into the preferences, it looks like the magnetism setting is the way you'd want to set it. But it isn't actually working. So I turned it down; saved prefs; and of course it still didn't work. So i go back in, and set it back to 100%; saved prefs; and now it *is* working.
    I haven't had the patience to describe this in in a reproduceable series of steps for a bug report, but if you have the energy, I recommend doing so.

    IncludeSnapInScreenset=1

    I added this to the end of the preferences file (edit config file), but it doesn't show up in the list of preferences (configuration and settings - properties window).  Is that a problem?

    Not sure, I think only the variables you add via preferences show there. Does it work?

    Set a snap to value then change screensets, change the snap setting and then go back to the previous screenset. If the snap value hasn't changed in the first screenset it's working.
