Midi controller/Sonar problem

I have a Fatar Studio Logic SL-1100 midi controller connected to my Layla 3G interface.  I'm running Sonar X1 64-bit in Windows 7.  I have installed the Sonar X1a and X1b patches and the latest quickfix.

When I set up a synth, such as Dimension Pro and play the first note from the controller, the meter for that track immediately slams all the way to the red, and the RME meter continued bouncing around 32 db, and no sound will play.  The RME meter won't stop until I turn off the Midi Controller.  I had gone into the Cakewalk .ini file to set up a Local Control off message, but that didn't change anything.  I'm not even sure if Local Control is the problem.  I haven't been able to figure out how to turn off Local Control in the midi controller.

Has anyone seen this symptom before?

Has anyone seen this symptom before?

Only with onboard soundcards with input set to "What You Hear", or an equivalent setting that routes the output back to the input, creating a feedback loop if you have input monitoring enabled on an audio track track. But it wouldn't happen if the soft synth is the only track in the project. I know RME interfaces are capable of doing this (digital loopback), maybe it got enabled inadvertently?

EDIT: Incidentally, having Local Control on would just create a single dupicate note event, which would typically give you a phasy sound, but not what you're describing. If you somehow had a MIDI Out acting as a Thru on the Fatar, you could get a MIDI looop, but IIRC, SONAR detects that and stops it, and besides, you would probably know it from the sound.

Are you hearing this pegged output level as well?

If you open up the piano roll and click on a key there, this doesn't happen?
...Just making sure it has nothing to do with the installation of Dimension Pro or something like that

Thanks for the input guys.  I think I solved the problem, but I'm not sure how.  I changed so many settings in Sonar at once that I'm not sure what setting change made the difference.  But, for now, it seems to work fine.  Most of the setting changes I made were buffer related.
