How to set up an external effects send?

I am using Sonar HS7 XL with the Cakewalk UA-25EX midi interface.  What I want to do is take a previously recorded vocal track and feed it into an external effects unit (in this case an older Digitech Vocalist II), and then use my midi keyboard to play harmonies and record those harmonies on a separate track.   Can this be done? If so how?

I used to do it on my Korg D3200 by using an effects send but I’m new to using a DAW and can’t figure it out.  I am also concerned because the UA25-EX has on the rear panel:
Output Jack L, R: [1/4 inch TRS phone type (balanced), RCA phono type]
I am using the TRS to feed my Monitors. If I use the RCA jacks will I get myself into a feedback loop?

Any suggestions?

Neil

Easy... playback the vocal track to the Vocalist and record the output from the Vocalist onto a new track. I'd recommend you record the MIDI track first so you can send the MIDI track to the Vocalist along with the Vocal track.

    Dave,

Thanks for the reply.  I guess my question is how to "playback the vocal track to the Vocalist and record the output from the Vocalist onto a new track."  Since I don't have an "effects send" how do I accomplish this in Sonar HS7XL?  I'm new and really need someone to walk me through it.

Also I'm confused about the "record the MIDI track first so you can send the MIDI track to the Vocalist along with the Vocal track."  What do you mean by that.

I'm real new to all this stuff and any help would be appreciated.

I do something similar from my external 8-track... all I do is crank the pan on the send channel full left and pan the OTHER (recording) channel full right.  Might that work for you?

In the project your existing vocal is in, create a new stereo bus.  On your UA-25EX, connect the left side out to your digital effects box.  If the effects box is stereo, connect the left and right outputs of the effects box to the inputs of the UA25EX, but only use the Left side output of the UA25EX into the left side of the effects box.  The reason to only do a mono send is your original track is a mono source.. a vocal.  Once you have created the stereo bus.. assign the output of that bus to the left analog audio outs of your UA25EX.  Then, on your vocal track.. create a send to that stereo bus.  This will get the audio out of your system and into the effects box.  Now, you have to create a return path.  Add an audio channel in the project and set the input of that track to be the analog audio inputs of the UA25EX.  This will get the audio from the effects box back into your project.  You will need to tweek the levels to mix the unprocessed track to the return of the effects box.  If you don't want any of the unprocessed audio, click on the "Pre" button in the send section of the vocal track, then set the level of that track all the way down to off.  Hope this helps
