Anyone use/try any of the portable digital recorders? Thoughts?
Never really gave these any thought, but for recording ambient nature/city/etc sound, I thought it might come in handy. Curious if they have decent quality results? I've seen some by Zoom, Marantz, Tascam, Sony.... Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I read a recent alrticle in EQ mag on line stating that Lucinda Williams uses the zoom and loves it. Apparently her new album was all scratch tracked on one and these scratch tracks may be released web only later on. That tells me that the sonic quality must be pretty decent.

We use the Zoom H2 a bunch for backup tracking. It's super clean but it has that barely powered IC chip grainy sound. It's great for scratch tracks or board tapes... they are very low noise. best, mike

https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

mike_mccue Sound Devices makes some with well made preamps. Those look nice, but are well out of my price range. The Zoom or Sony units would have to suffice... I've heard decent things about the Sony units (keeping in mind their price point)...they are alleged to be a little higher quality than the Zoom's. I've always had a bit of a problem with Sony stuff....but, maybe these would surprise me.

The recording quality on mine is fantastic.

I have a Zoom H4N and use it both standalone and as an audio interface for my laptop for Sonar LE Sounds and works amazingly for such a price.

I don't own one - but I have seen them in use and they sound excellent. The only caution is to make sure you read the manual. I helped a friend record their band's live show and unbeknownst to me, he had a preset activated which caused a lot of clipping. (I think it was heavy compression.) Reading the manual before hand is preferable over trying to read it in a dark club.)
