effect tails

Hey all,
I am using NI Battery 3 as a VST plugin and I've noticed that the tails of my cymbals are ringing out forever. Inside the audio options, I don't have play effect tails after stopping checked.. so I am not sure why this started suddenly. I looked in battery 3 to see if there was something in there that may be causing that, and I was unable to find this in the options menu..perhaps I overlooked something..

Anyways.. If there is a way to stop the cymbals from ringing out forever, please let me know.

Thanks,

Are you using any effects like reverb or delay the cymbals?  If not, then effects tails would not be relevant here.

Or do you mean that the actual sound of the cymbal takes a long time to fade (which is normal for cymbals anyway)?  If so, you could activate the Volume Envelope (on the Cell tab in Battery) and adjust the Release time.

No, no reverb on anything but the snare and toms.. and very light reverb at that.
I have never messed with the volume envelopes in Battery, but I can give it a shot.

Ever measured the decay of a real cymbal?

They can ring on for ages until they achieve a rest state.

Does battery give you the option to choke cymbals? If so, you might want to try that.

What about compression? Do you have any on your cymbals? If so, try adjusting the relase time and see if that helps.

I would check if there is a CC#64(Sustain) event on any of the midi drumtracks(bigger than 63 in value means on).

It's not clear whether you are bothered by tails when stopping transport, or if in a mix and every hit just rings forever?

Usually drum sampler don't care about note off events and should not care about Sustain either, but it's worth a look.

Otherwise AllNotesOff(midi CC#123) is the panic button. Pressing panic in Sonar might give you a hint if it has any effect.

Just a few ideas to try...

lfm, I am not really sure on CC events ( as I have never used them, or know where they are even located in the PRV). Also, choke may be an option inside Battery, but I have not run into it. I would like to know more about the CC events since there are MIDI notes that I would like to lower the volume for, but not velocity.

I routinely shorten the duration of my suspended cymbal roll on Battery using the ADHSR (make sure it's turned on to do this) and adjusting various elements of the envelope (e.g. sustain, release).  Without doing this, the duration of the roll is way too long for my needs. tf

Lots of good suggestions here for shortening the length of the cymbal, but the way I read the OP is the problem isn't the sample length but rather the fact that it keeps on going after stopping playback. If I'm reading that right, then any solution would have to be found inside Battery itself.

When you stop playback, SONAR stops sending data to the instrument - but you don't actually kill the instrument. It's still running, and will continue to play the last sample(s) until they're finished. Every soft synth I have works this way, although I sure wish some offered a silence-on-stop option.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
