Think the IRS will notice/care?
I'm adding my pup (Yellow Lab) as a dependent. According to the rules he meets the following criteria: Relationship - whether by blood or adoption, or a descendant of one of these. Residence - has the same principal residence as the taxpayer for more than half the tax year. Age- must be under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year Support - did not provide more than one-half of his/her own support for the year. So, the way I figure it. I am good to go.

BTW, I added all of the CH as dependents. See why the National Debt is so high? My refund this year is $1.5T (wondering if UAD will come out with new plugs soon)

As a CPA, I'm going to have to recommend you don't do this Unlike credit card companies the IRS can throw you in jail, lol

Yeah, you all may be right. So, instead, I will put him down as farm equipment (hold digger) and depreciate his cost. Yeah,......that's the ticket.

However, while in jail, the government will provide you with free room and board, healthcare, gym membership, clothing and education. It's win/win! The preceeding message was brought to you by the Federal Penitentiary System. "We've got a spot picked out just for you."

The last time I read the Health Care Reform Act, it had a provision in there to provide health care for animals ... I'm not seeing why you can't claim them as a dependant if the goverment is paying for their health care? btw ... you can write off their food and other costs of owning them if you have a business and you have the dogs there to 'protect' your business. So if you work at home, bang, your golden.

So if you used 20% of the house for business, you could write off 20% of the dog (note I haven't researched this at all, so I could be wrong).

I'm not sure of the details and for the life of me I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember my wife and I talking about it. We have 2 dogs so of course the light was going off in my head immediately when I saw it. :)

There is no mention of pets in the national healthcare act passed, nor their healthcare. A legislator in Calif. did introduce a bill last year to regulate companies that sell "pet insurance". Randy

Katie, on those grounds I could claim 2 of my 3 (independent ) adult children, my mother and my girlfriend's dog.
