2 is faster - about as fast as firewire.  What that means is you can run multiple i/o's in duplex, both record and playback.  because of the limited bandwidth of usb 1.1 you can record and playback two tracks simultaneously at up to 48 kHz and 24 bits, and that is all.  No playback/recording at 96 kHz, and no more than 4 tracks coming or going at once.

I only know that 2 is faster than 1.1 and 3 is coming soon.... maybe it's already here.

2.0 is much faster but keep in mind that only matters if you have a use for the extra speed.   If the interface is designed to do what it does within that amount of data throughput there is no need for more.  With hard drives more is always better because the file can always get there faster but with timeline based stuff like audio it has to wait for the audio to arrive anyway to it can't really use the extra speed.

Yeah, the 2.0 implementation is much better than 1.1.  I have 3.0 on my latest motherboard, but I currently don't own anything that supports 3.0 so I can't speak to it.

Data transfer are much more "tolerable" when using 2.0 as it was with 1.1 from my experiences.

I run two USB 3.0 External Harddrives.  Both are noticably faster than USB 2.0.  That is, these ext drives (Seagate and WD) use either USB 2.0/3.0.  When in 3.0 they are faster than 2.0.  I use them with Acronis for running disk images as backup.
