Lighthouse (Acoustic)
I'm new to this forum and promise to check out and comment on songs...especially if you leave me a comment. Besides comments on the song itself, i'd really appreciate constructive comments, tips, suggestions on how to make the recording sound better (levels, eq settings, etc). Hello J and welcome to the forum! Well you're off to a good start. Just listening on the computer speakers right now, but did you record the guitar direct input? Guitar tone is a matter of preference, so I'm not sure if the sound you got is what you were going for or not.
The two voices work well together, but the female vocals are overpowering the male vocals in parts, and some of the timing differences are pretty obvious.
The song has a nice vibe to it though and it comes through that you really are enjoying yourselves!

Thanks! and thanks for listening and commenting. Yes, I recorded my acoustic/electric direct into a Fostex digital recorder. Not sure it was the smartest choice. Do you have any suggestions for me? Would recording the guitar mic'd give it a better sound? I do need to pull the female vox down a bit in spots in the mix.

Some people like the DI sound of an acoustic. Generally it will sound better mic'd. That does take a lot of practice and in the Techniques forum do a search and you'll find a lot of suggestions that definitely have helped me out.

Hi Jeff, nice song but for me that di'd guitar sound is really distracting. Even if you combine the di'd guitar with a mic , you'll get a much nicer sound. I personally use a cheap Behringer B-5 mic pointed at the 12th fret in combination with the preamp in the guitar. I record this on two tracks, one mic and one di'd, on the di'd track I use reverb and a stereo widener to get rid of that very direct sound and a compressor to capture the spikey sounds you tend to get with a di'd guitar. On the mic track I use as high-pass filter to get rid of rumble. I don't use reverb on the mic track. Now you can bring up or down the mic or the di'd track till you get a sound you like. An added benefit of recording mic and di is that it gives you options while mixing.

Great suggestion, Rik. Thanks. I will definitely give that a try. It's my own fault for not paying more attention when in the studio with previous bands. In the rare case where we recorded a song with an acoustic guitar I recall the guitar being mic'd but not what the engineer did to round out the sound. I appreciate your inputs.
