Sonar taking control of stand alone apps

Hello,
I am having an issue that is new to me.. I am using Guitar rig 4 (stand alone, not VST) with an M-audio fast track pro usb. Everything is ok using the program, but when Its open and I start sonar..sonar doesn't find my audio device. If I close guitar rig, and then open sonar, it finds my device.  And it goes both ways.. guitar rig 4 will not find a device if its in use by Sonar.

I have always used these programs as stand alones, and not VST. Any reason why I can only use one program at a time with this device?

I am using win 7 x64, and in the sounds panel, I made sure "applications take exclusive control of this device" was not checked.

Any help is appreciated..

Thanks,

*Edit* - I also forgot to add that when I use these programs as VSTs, I get no signal..but as standalones I do. Any ideas on that would help as well.

You can't use ASIO devices with more than one app at a time. Switch to WDM mode or use the VST version.

Thanks Daveny, that sounds like a good solution. I will give that a shot when I get home.  Only issue I have with this is when I switch to WDM, my latency is 10ms, versus ASIO which gives me 2.5ms.

ASIO drivers in sonar should not prevent other software applications from using it unless the driver was written against ASIO v1.0 (which is highly unlikely unless you have old drivers - like more than 3 or 4 years old).  ASIO2 allows multiple apps to use the same driver, BUT as dave says, you can only use one SOUNDCARD at the same time.

if your other apps are losing the soudncard drivers when you open sonar, then the solution should be to go to OPTIONS>AUDIO and check the box to SHARE DRIVERS WITH OTHER PROGRAMS.

I am only using 1 soundcard, which is the Fast track usb pro..however I don't believe I am using asio2, unless I am and don't know about it if its specifically named that?  I did not think to do share drivers with other programs in the options..I am sure that may work.  I did try Daveny's WDM recommendation and it worked. I will try what you said Beagle.

yes, you're only using 1 soundcard if you're using ASIO.  it forces it.

yes, you're using ASIO2 unless you have m-audio drivers from 2000 or earlier (ASIO2 spec released in 1999).  I only mentioned ASIO1 for full disclosure.  it's almost impossible at this point for you to be using ASIO1 type drivers.
