Two words: R. F. I guess fidelity may also be an issue, but I'd be more concerned about that wireless introducing noise in the lines. I've worked at too many fringe theaters that had gobs of problems even with line level balanced signals. But hey, might work. Just keep the receipt! :-)

Three big problems with wireless anything: interference, limited bandwidth and an insatiable appetite for batteries. I used to use a cordless mouse, and loved it because it reduced desk clutter. But it would sometimes work erratically or not at all. Not all the time, but it seemed to always fail at the worst possible time: when I was on the phone with a customer. Turned out that was no coincidence. The cordless phone was interfering with the cordless mouse. So the cordless mouse went away. Then there is the problem of limited bandwidth. Headphones are deceptive enough anyway, with their nonlinear frequency response. Chopping off the high end surely can't help. The Bluetooth variety are more prone to this. Also consider the cost. For the price of a wireless headphone you can buy a pretty nice pair of conventional cans. Personally, I'll always opt for the highest-fidelity solution I can afford.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Some wireless models (e.g., Sennheiser RS-120) have a transmitter that switches off after getting no signal for a short while. Then the headphones start blasting out loud noise because they have lost the signal from the transmitter. It's not nice to have the headphones on your head when that happens. I understand that other, more expensive, Sennheiser models don't work that way. The transmitter tells the headphones that it is switching off so the headphones act appropriately.

I love the Sennheiser wireless headphones! I can't tell you how many times I used to stand up with my headphones on, with either my foot on the cable or whatever, and pranng - the cable comes out, or breaks or you scare the hell out of yourself as the headphones jam into your head. ;-) I had the RS90 - which worked on IR and did compress the bandwidth (but it was still fine) but now I have the RS170 which is full frequency. It transmits in the GHz so there's no interference, and the battery life is fine - and it recharges when not in use. Some people moan because they can't wander around their (big) house - but sitting in your studio near the transmitter is fine. I'm not going back to wired headphones.

I bought a Sennheiser TR120 model headset. It's currently a "dust collector".

i would imagine the freedom of wireless cans must be nice, especially for tracking guitar/bass and even more so for a drummer. the rechargeable docking kind would have to be a must (unless you've got shares in duracell). keep in mind, that the money you spend on wired headphones is all going toward the headphones whereas the money you spend on wireless cans, a substantial part of it is going toward the wireless part. so, i would imagine you'll get more headphone for your money with a wired model. like ...wicked said, just keep the receipt.

I recall a similar thread a few years back. The advice I can give echo's the comments already made. 1. It is possible that the cans will not interfere and life will be good. 2. Get a set that have rechargeable batteries and automatically recharge when you place them back on the headphone holder/charger. This way, they don't eat you out of house & home buying batteries. 3. Keep the sales receipt in case you do experience RF/interference issues. Return them if they interfere. I have a wireless mouse for my lappy. It gets really long life out of normal alkaline batteries and super long life out of the lithium batteries. It doesn't interfere with anything in the studio, or the house for that matter.

I got a pair as a christmas present, they are used only for my online ( this one BTW ) computer. They have horrible compression circuit built in...I doubt if it's an intentional compressor I'm thinking it's a by product of the limited bandwidth being talked about here or compensation for it...yes quite noisy as well. but it's better than blasting everyone else and it's better than sticking ear pods,,,, er where ever they stick. After all its' only MP3....crappy sound is no loss.

I have the Sennheiser RS120s (which I referred to in post #6 above). I really liked them when used to listen to TV and DVD movies. The other day I attached them to the sound system on my PC used for music (I use a full audio receiver for power). I immediately noticed a couple things that were not an issue with TV and movies: 1)Quite a bit of background hiss. Probably due to the radio connection (some folks say the IR models are quieter). 2) Distortion on only moderately strong peaks. Sounded just like a clipped digital signal. The distortion was not heard on my speakers or on a wired headphone (Sony MDR-V6). That coupled with the transmitter turning off when the signal goes away for awhile, the RS-120s are now out of my music system. I did enjoy the freedom of no cord though. --Larry

I've tried corded phones and found the cords always in my way or being over-stretched some- even with an extension cord, bad for the phones. Then I started using an older set of wireless cans I already had. I have not gone back. Yes, the fidelity is lower; yes, when signal is lost the cans emit a loud static sound (that I easily turn off.) But the freedom to go almost anywhere in my little 2 room studio is great! I'm looking now to find a better cordless set. My son just finished four days of drum recording with me (14 songs) at 4 to 6 hours per day wearing my old cordless headphones. The simple fact is that they work- they get the job done- but don't think I'll ever use them to edit or mix!
