Kontakt
I just started diskovering the many intriguing things that play in Kontakt, but am diskouraged by the stikker shokk. Is there a way to get started using Kontakt widgets without shelling out 400 bux --or whatever it is--for the player? I lust for the guitar emulaotrs.

You could try the Komplete 7 Players for free, if you don't have them yet. Or Komplete Elements for a bit more of a library ... it's quite inexpensive.

Seriously, Kontakt is far more than just a player, you get a very sophisticated sampler and a huge library of excellent sounds and is worth the price tag. More so if you add a little extra and get Komplete. Komplete is expensive but you do get very good value for money. Once you have Kontakt, you can really start spending!! But there is also a lot of cheap and free stuff too. That said it is still a serious chunk of money. Check out if you are available for a cross grade and watch out for specal deals. The way it worked for me was I bought Steven Slate EX in a AudioMidi no brainer sale, which is runs in the free player and needs regestration with NI. This entitled me to a cross grade, NI then has a half proce crossgrade deal and I got Kontakt for 129 UK pounds.

Yes - fine if you want to run NI stuff or NI licenced libraries, but third party stuff like the Orange Tree and Indiginus Guitars will only run in demo mode. The full version of Kontake is required for them.

It is not without risks...but check on e-bay. The seller I used had sold 4 or 5 copies of komplete 6 before I purchased and still had 100% good feedback. I bought komplete 6 for 250.00. It was a totally legtitimate, shrink wrapped, box and the SN all worked with NI service center. I never found Kontakt on it own for less than 200.00. So for an extra 50 bucks I got a ton-o-stuff. Make sure you do not buy an upgrade only package or an academic version. Again, you have to watch out, but you can do it for cheap. JR

Yes.... On the NI web site you can download fully functional players and sample libraries. I had the Kore Player and a sweet library of sounds that cost me NIDA, Zip, Zero.... I used it for quite some time before I bought the retail version of K6. I love the way they spell things.... charming....

...diskouraged by the stikker shokk There are a surprising number of freebies out there, and plenty of good deals on commercial libraries, too - but they all require you to buy the full Kontakt first. Only the more expensive packages will run on the free player, because they have paid NI for a license to do so and pass the cost on to you. There is no way around it: you can pay NI now or you can pay them later. Case in point: Orange Tree Evolution is $160 and requires full Kontakt. Electri6ity is $400 and does not. One way to get Kontakt for less is to buy some product that qualifies for a discounted crossgrade price. Another is to try and find a second-hand copy of Kontakt 3 (or even K2). It will host most of the available libraries, especially all the free and ultra-cheap ones. It's mostly the higher-end products that require Kontakt 4.

I'd go with suggestions to check out eBay. If you look carefully at a seller's feedback on eBay and use PayPal to pay, you're going to be pretty safe. I have a good friend who purchased KONTAKT on eBay. Besides, I recently had a seller send me a badly scratched up Wii disc that was listed "Like New." I used eBay's buyer protection policy and got a full refund (except for my having to pay shipping back to the seller). I sold KONTAKT 3 at KVR last year for, I think, $150 USD (I would only recommend buying from KVR if you know the community members and ONLY using PayPal in case you do have a problem). There are a lot of good deals out there on second hand copies of KONTAKT.

No, I think it's more complicated than that... any (most?) "powered-by Kontakt" libs... like Chris Hein, Vir2, etc.... are eligible for crossgrade, but not the libs sold directly by NI themselves... like the scarbee stuff, alicia keys, abbey road drums, etc. At least that was the deal during the Dec sale. Even though the player is free, with the registered libs you're still paying for the licensing with NI as part of the product cost, it's just that you don't also need N "customized" versions of the same player. For some reason they don't allow crossgrade from their own libs, not sure why. At least that's what I recall...

Thanks for the tip, Widetrack. I've had that film on my Netflix queue for over a year. I'll try and make it to that screening. The EMP theater isn't very big, though, so it's pobably a good idea to buy tickets early.

Quite simply the best "unkept" secret in the music industry. I grew up on those guys (sorry Carol...and gals) and idolized them. Along with Motown's killer session guys, giants...demi-gods...purveyors of my (and most of your) memories. Rock on!!

Hope you make it. BitF. I just found out my daughter has a jiujitsu competition the next day in Portland, so no geeky fun for me this time. Should be able to make the one in Portland, though. Funny coincidence--I've just been trying to put together a keybgoard part for a song I'm doing and was using Larry Knechtel's great performance in "Rockin Pneumonia . . . " as inspiration. It'll be cool to see him in the film, if it has footage of him. Turns; out he had been living in Yacoult when he passed a few years ago.

I just saw Komplete Elements for sale on Ebay for $85, and it says it includes Kontakt 4. Is this Kontakt going to work with Orange tree or the other Guitar emulators? Why is it so tricky to figure this out? I feel like I'm on a used car lot in East LA. I'm gonna have to call Orange tree and ask them. This is really obfruscatory marketing on the part of NI.

Widetrack I feel like I'm on a used car lot in East LA. This is really obfruscatory marketing on the part of NI. EBAY is a virtual used car lot. If you go to the NI site what is included is very clearly stated, and the price from NI $59 so not only are you getting misleading information yoy getting charged over the odds too. http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/komplete-elements/ To play and control all these sounds, KOMPLETE ELEMENTS provides three powerful player engines, which can be used stand-alone or within your DAW: REAKTOR 5 PLAYER for synthesizers GUITAR RIG 4 PLAYER for amps, cabinets and effects KONTAKT 4 PLAYER for sampled instruments So the answer is you get Kontakt 4 player, which will only play regestered libraries, which does not include any of the Orange Tree Products. Here is a quote from their website. Due to the extensive scripting, this sample library is available in KONTAKT 4 format only. The sample library requires the full retail version of KONTAKT 4, so it is not compatible with the free KONTAKT Player. http://www.orangetreesamples.com/evolution-acoustic-guitar-steel-strings
