Stupid internet tricks and scams to watch out for.
Just thought I would start a thread about stupid internet scams and tricks. And also stupid browser advice. I'll admit, I had the Rick' Roll happen to me one time. I was a newbie at the time. I think somebody else might could provide instructions on how to correct that problem better than me. I know how, I am just not that good with explanations on how to do stuff. Something that I've noticed a trend of here lately are these jerks who are replying to advice and saying stuff like AND DO NOT DO THIS! :::: They will say something like "the solution is simple - just hit ALT-F4", not sure about Internet Explorer or other browsers, I use firefox, but that exits the entire browser in firefox. I think it's a universal thing, I haven't used many other browsers, sorry. Any information that you might provide in this forum might be useful to others here, so please don't make a joke of anything, this is something that might help someone! I know anyone can do a search on recent scams and all that kind of stuff and post that stuff here. But that's not the point, the point is all about helping others to avoid those scams without reporting news after the fact, or that is TALK ABOUT AND HELP BY TELLING OTHERS WHAT ALMOST HAPPENED TO YOU or WHAT DID. Hope someone helps someone from this post. Good luck!

Alt-F4 is the standard comand to close program/window in Windows. Been there since (at least) Windows 3.11.

I'm about to pull the plug on Facebook with all the c-rap on it these days....viruses, spam bots, and other mess.... Not to mention the total waste of time and the meaningless drivel that is in those posts there.... "I just went to starbucks" .... "off to work" ....... so who really cares? Not me, so go to work and drink your coffee, I don't need to know. If I want meaningless drivel, I mean after all, I got the coffee house....right?

It's just a way to put a label on people chatting on the internet to make money and market it. Heck, I looked on facebook the other day and sadly, I found one person I know from my past. So I removed the account. It was a waste of time. Twitter is only good for people making money off of content in my opinion. For you and me it's a waste of time. Twitter in my opinion is nothing more than a personal headline information idea, instead of a global news head line thing. RSS on the person, instead of RSS on the latest headline news. A waste of time IMO. Entertainment for some I guess, but I could care less. Twitter is a glorified stalking chatter box, JMO. Oh well, just a few of my None accurate thoughts and OPINIONS.

You can't remove your account from Facebook as far as I can tell. It never goes away once you create one. If I'm wrong, please give me details because I'd love to remove mine. Lately for some odd reason about 20 people I went to High School with have tried to reach me on Facebook. Some of them I never spoke 10 words to the entire time we went to school together.

You can remove your face book account. Dang, I'm sorry, but I'd have to rejoin to re-delete it to tell you how I done it. I did it, there is an option but I can't remember exactly how or what I done. Try doing a bing or google search, just type in the question and see what happens. Maybe you'll get lucky. That being said, you are right about one thing, "Anything you do or have done on the internet is saved somewhere and will always be there forever in some place". You can remove your account from face book, I know that for a fact because I done it. I just can't tell you how I done it without rejoining, and things might have changed since then so I don't want to rejoin to find out, sorry. Good Luck!

Hmmm. I bet I misinterpreted the emails I was getting. I was able to go in and deactivate my account, but I kept getting emails saying someone was searching for me. I bet Facebook kept track of my account and who was searching for me even though I deactivated the account.

You can delete your FB account, but it takes a bit. First, deactivate it, like others have said... then, you mark it for deletion. As long as you don't go back and login to the account, after about two weeks, it will be deleted. I've heard that all of your data goes away... I'll believe it when I see it.

Speaking of. If ever you get some Postal service or FedEx mail saying something like "Your parcel has not reached its destination. The tracking number is attached to this mail.." then see an attachment that isn't a .txt file, it's obviously a virus. I've had 4 mails of this type this month, 2 from a proposed 'Fed-Ex', and 2 from 'USPS Postal Service'

There's another one going round at the moment that alleges to be an update to Adobe reader - but the originating server (at least on the one I got looked like it was an nntp server somewhere in Germany. "Welcome to my *zap* file!"

The first virus I ever got was when I got my first IBM PC, before that I had only used commodore computers, vic20,c64,c128,Amiga. I don't know the name of the virus, but what it done was self replicate itself over and over until the hard drive was full, and at the time I didn't know enough on how to deal with it back then. I could get rid of it now, I'd just kill the process and remove it, or at least that would be my first idea, aside from using software to remove it. Eventually way back then I had to reinstall my entire hard drive from floppy disk. Around that time the fastest modem you could purchase was a 2400 baud modem for dial up, that's how long ago that happened. I download a lot of freeware, and I always scan everything that comes to my pc, if the file or files aren't over 20mb's I'll send them to Jotti's or Virus scan to have it scanned by several programs, if there's any result I wont use it, false positive or not. You can't be too careful now days. For those who may not know of these sites : Jotti's Malware Scan Virus Total There are other services out there, that's the two that I use most of the time, I use Jotti's a lot because of the wait time on virus total when their service is real busy.

I haven't used Virus protection since 95/96 and I haven't had a virus in all those years. I think the last AV I used was McAfee on a floppy? I did get a virus once off a floppy disk that had the drivers on it for a mouse. Die Hard II, wicked virus. :( Nothing could remove it. I think Firefox scans for virus's when you are downloading a file.
