HELP EXPORTING PROJECT TO WAV FILE SONAR HS6

Hi all,

Haven't been here in a while As my frustrations with the SONAR Home Studio 6 continue. So as a final request from a musician who simply wants to not lose the projects he has created on cakewalk before I completely wash and remove the program. I am attempting to export the songs i have written to audio wave files, and have pretty much been able to accept one problem. The exported file is whisper quiet and barely audible when playback volume is maxed out. What can I do to fix this? When I play back the tracks inside SONAR they sound fine (meaning loud). I really just dont want to lose what ive done so far. I have no desire to be a professional or anything. I just dont want to lose this, please HELP.....thanks.

Cakewalk Home Studio 6, Core 2 Duo @ 1.83ghz, 3GB operating memory, 160GB hard drive, Line 6 POD studio UX2.

That's not something you should have to accept. The exported wave file should at least be very close in volume to the original project.
    What are your export settings?
The default bit depth in SHS6 is 32. This should be changed to 16 for playback in Windows Media Player and for conversion to MP3. It's easy to miss, because it is not onscreen when you open the export dialog. Drag the Export window up a bit to see the whole thing.
Ideally, you should export your waves to 16/44,100 for universal playback.
Does Windows play through the UX2? You may have a channel turned down (such as wav input. I'm not sure how the UX2 reports that)
If you import the exported wave into a blank SHS6 project, does it have the proper sound?
Are you using a master bus in SHS6?
What export settings are you selecting?
I suspect the root of the problem is a relatively minor misfire with a setting somewhere.
SHS6 itself is a strong performer. Yes, it's a bit complicated, but there are basic routines to get you through.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, and give us as much detail as you can when we ask questions of you. We can't see your computer, so you need to tell us what you see.
Stick with it a bit longer. I'd hate to see someone give up on such a good program.

I had the identical problem in the past when I was using a M-Audio soundcard and with the help of Beagle and others here, managed to pinpoint the problem. Obviously this may not be the solution to your problem but might be worth a look. For my problem, it revolved around three settings. The volume setting of my soundcard, the volume setting of Windows audio and the volume setting on my speakers.

Firstly, I had the volume on my speakers turned up high which was masking a problem with my other settings.

Next, have a look at the Windows Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Volume. You will see a box on the Volume tab called "Advanced". Click it and a mixer box with four sliders opens. Is the volume slider close to the bottom? Then look at the mixer for your soundcard. Is the slider close to or at the top? If so, that is your problem - or at least that was my problem. Try moving the volume mixer in the Windows audio mixer and I suspect the slider on your soundcard mixer will move at the same time.

My problem was that even though my soundcard mixer volume was at max, the Windows audio mixer volume slider was close to the bottom.

I may well be wrong (and I am sure someone will tell me!) but I believe that Home Studio when it exports to a .wav file sets the volume from the Soundcard AND Windows Audio mixers. So if the Windows Audio mixer Volume slider is set to low, the volume of the resulting .wav file will be low.

The way I solved my problem was two-fold. Firstly, I bought another soundcard! This helped because the new soundcard seemed to have better sound quality than my M-Audio (or at least to my un-tutored ears!). I then started using "Bounce to track" to first create the project  Wav file within Track View. That way, I could see the volume level via the wav form. With the M-Audio, I would have to increase the gain (Process / Audio / Gain) of the wav file by 12 or more db. With the new soundcard, I generally only need 3db or none.

This may not be of any help to you at all, but I offer it as a possibility.

    Best Regards
    Malcolm

Malcolmb has some very potential culprits pinpointed there.

Toolshed, you should give us a description of your workflow. It's hard to say what you can do to fix things if we don't know what has lead to the undesirable result. What are the level meters on the master bus showing when you export, and what are the levels of the wav? How do the wav-waveforms look like - very flat?

HS6 is such a basic straightforward software that if you haven't solved the problem you have with it, you're not very likely to get any better results with any other sequencer.
Patience and very pedant manual reading usually get you there.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
