Yeah the basics videos were a steal at $19, but I'm gonna have to hear a couple of reviews before I pluck down $40 for tips and tricks. Not that I'm being skeptical, the beginner videos were great, but for $40 I wanna know what I don't know.

I bought a year of videos for like $90!  Hell of a deal with some discounts and all.
Just watched the v-vocal videos on it and it was nice little trick to make things sound better.  I do feel a lot more comfortable working with it now that I know every little detail about it.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the V-Vocal videos. Yours is the very first feedback I've gotten - they've only been out a few hours so far

    Hey Charlie and Laney,

Thanks for the positive feedback - I'm glad to hear you are enjoying them. You are correct that of course that it is impossible to cover everything. Sonar X1 is a HUGE DAW! There's no immediate follow up series planned. But that could easily change. If these new videos are received well and we see there is a demand for more; we'll be there!!

As promised, here are the descriptions of all the Sonar X1 Tips and Tricks titles:

Track View Tips - Explore ways to work creatively and efficiently with workflow techniques available directly in the Track View Window.

    01. Fun With MIDI Parameters - Explore some ways of using MIDI track transpose, timing, and velocity parameters to generate some funky rhythmic variations of bass or drum parts.

    02. Input Echo and MIDI Layering - Learn how the input echo function is used for layering sounds, and how preset input configurations are created and used for multiple MIDI controllers to trigger multiple instruments independently.

    03. The Arpeggiator - Explore the arpeggiator’s parameters and see how it is used to generate preset patterns and to arpeggiate held chords in a variety of shapes.

    04. Fun With Folders - Explore some ways of using track folders to create and edit composite clips, nested looping, and stutter style edits.

    05. Clip Selection Groups - See how clip selection groups let you treat and edit multiple clips as a single unit. They’re great for editing multi track recordings, as well as creative slicing and dicing.

06.Nudge - Learn how to set and use the three user definable nudge values. And see an example of how they can be used to reorganize sliced drum loops to create rhythmic variety and fills.

    07. Keyboard Editing - Learn how to use the numeric keypad for mouse free control over zooming and scrolling, establishing selections, and fading and cropping clip boundaries.

    08. Reverse and Snap Offset - Learn how to create and sync up a reverse cymbal swell using a standard soft synth along with the Bounce To Track, Reverse, and Snap Offset functions.

Time Correction Techniques - Learn some of the various ways note positions, duration, and velocities can be made to conform either to the grid or to other clips.

    09. Groove Quantize - Duration - See how the groove quantize functions are used to conform the note durations of one clip to another.

    10. Groove Quantize - Velocity - Explore the Groove Quantize velocity features, how to save a groove quantize template, and how to create velocity ramps using the Scale Velocity feature.

    11. Fit Improvisation  - Learn two ways to have Sonar create a tempo map and conform to freely played performances.

    12. Length And Fit To Time - Explore how these two processes are used to alter either the timing or the tempo of both audio and MIDI clips.

Audio Snap - Learn how to manipulate and edit Audio Snap transient markers across individual as well as multiple clips.

    13. Working With Audio Snap - Learn how to manipulate Audio Snap transient markers manually, and some different ways to apply the timing from one audio track to another.

    14. Quantizing Multi Tracked Drums - Learn the step-by-step workflow used to correct the timing of live multi tracked drums while maintaining the phase relationships between the tracks.

    15. Snapping MIDI Notes To Audio Transients - See how to use Audio Snap to snap MIDI notes to peaks in an audio file.

    16. Reconstructive Surgery With Audio Snap - See how the split beats into clips function can be used to completely rebuild a drum loop from the ground up.

MATRIX VIEW -  Look at some of the various ways of using and controlling the matrix for real time triggering  of cells ands clips

    17. The Matrix: Overview and Setup - Learn how to set up and navigate the Matrix view.

    18. The Matrix: Mouse And QWERTY Control - See how the various triggering modes work as cells are triggered using both the mouse and the QWERTY keyboard.

    19. The Matrix: MIDI Learn And Recording - Learn how to set up a MIDI controller to trigger Matrix cells, and record the process in real time.

V-Vocal - Learn some novel ways to use and abuse this powerful vocal correction tool.

    23. You Send Me - Learn how to use traditional send and bussing techniques to create a thickened vocal sound with the Sonitus Modulator plug-in.

    24. Lost In Space - See how a reverb return can be sculpted using a compressor with it’s side chain input set to react to a send coming from the source track feeding the reverb bus.

    25. The Chain Gang - Learn how route the send of a drum track to the side chain input of the Sonitus Gate plug-in, as it is used to chop up a sustained pad based on the rhythm of the drums.

    26. Delay We Were - Learn how to use and route the Delay module in the VX-64 Vocal Strip plug-in for some creative vocal sound design.

    27. Ex Squeeze Me - Learn how to route the drum outputs to a bus and set up parallel, or New York style, compression.

    28. Control Groups - Explore some useful real world examples of how absolute, relative, and custom control groups help make mixing go more smoothly.

    29. FX Chains  - Explore Sonar X1’s new FX Chain feature and how it lets you load, save, and manage multiple audio plug-ins as a single preset.

    30. LP 64 Multi Band Compressor - Join me in exploring the LP 64 Multi Band Compressor interface, and see how it is used to process a final stereo mix.

    Hi Jan,

It's hard to be completely unbiased, there's an inherent conflict of interest. Sonar is the best DAW on the planet, buy my videos!

Seriously though, honestly, I think Sonar X1 is a great DAW. It is relatively intuitive - as far as any of these DAWs can be intuitive. They are all such deep programs, and there is so much complexity to manage, that no matter how well they are organized - they are just, well, complex! But I do find Sonar very well thought out and laid out. My other main DAWs that I am comparing it to BTW are Logic and Pro Tools. I think Sonar X1 has a good mix of useful features plus some stimulating aspects that are just plain "fun" and easy to be creative with.

Having been fortunate enough to watch from the sidelines as the developers continually worked on and released new betas and tackled all the issues and bugs as they were developing X1 plus the version a and b updates, I can say that Cakewalk has a VERY dedicated team. No DAW is perfect, there are always going to be conflicts and issues. The best you can hope for is a dedicated and talented team of developers that are continually on the case, and they are both dedicated and on the case. It might feel like the updates are far and few between, but they are constantly at work. When you don't see or hear anything about updates, that is generally when they are working the hardest! (seriously).

Having said all of this - full disclosure time - I have less experience working in Windows than I do on the Mac OS. So, the performance and general "feel" of the audio engine and the OS wasn't exactly what I was used to. Being less experienced on Windows, it's entirely possible that I unknowingly didn't have things perfectly optimized. It wasn't "worse". It just "felt different". So I don't know how much of that is inherent to Windows and how much is Sonar specific. I guess what I am trying to say is, I can't honestly speak about Sonar in comparison to other Windows DAWs, only Mac DAWs; which is like comparing apples and oranges (both great fruits, just different!).

Short answer than is, in terms of workflow, I find X1 to be very well thought out, the features are all there and not that difficult to get to and use. The controls are all intuitive, once you understand where to look and the general workflow. It is inspiring to use and to mix in. And I had a ball doing all of these videos! In terms of bugs and stability, I can't really comment since it is really the only Windows DAW I have experience with.

( Don't know if I actually really said anything here in this whole email  )

eli.i think that was a very fair reply to a tough question.as users here have had mixed reviews.i myself love x1,have had little to no problems with it and find it to be the up and coming future of sonar..it was a big jump for them and it took balls for them to go out on a limb and change around the user interface.i for one credit them on this because i love the new look.though others have complained"wheres my 8.5" or "wheres my little buttons"
one question i would like to know but i dare ask. did you have any problems with the version you were using?.i know its unfair to ask so dont reply.
i just know alot of users that have watched the groove 3 videos had said"why is that feature working in the video and it doesnt work on mine.
so curiously was it a special version you were using?
let me say ive followed some of your other work like on the 8.5 videos and others,i was very excited to learn you were doing the groove three x1 explained.
you are perfect for these vidios and as i said before in my previous post there were some things not covered but you did cover just about everything.
you should be very proud of yourself you did an excellent job.

    Hi Charlie,

I was using a beta version for both the X-plained and the tips and Tricks videos. It's ironic, I was worried that there might be features in the final version of X1 that I might not have available in the beta. Little did I know the opposite would be true!

But DAW development is like a moving train that stops at various train stations. It is constantly being developed. At some point, they have to say, okay - we're going to release this. But then they keep on working on it the day after it's released. Kind of like a moving train that stops at a station. Some passengers get on, some get off, the train continues it's journey. Except there's no end of the line. The DAW is never finished. Where do they decide to put train stations along a train's journey? At the places that are most populated. When do they decide to declare a version release worthy - when they are the closest to what they want to achieve at that stage in development. And then it continues.....

    metaphor mode: officially off....

    Is my accent that obvious?

Yes, I am Canadian. Born and raised (and still living) in Montreal, Quebec.

what gave it away was the way you say process..i know here in boston..we say pronounced:praw-sess..and you say...pronounced:pro-sess.
though out here in boston we seemd to have lost the letter R.
that is wicked cool..<<---theres another boston thing.
either way.i can say theres alot of excitment about these videos.
and a great time duration to cover alot of areas.
