I need help with my midi ASAP!
Hey guys! I'm in a real rush with this one! Okay, I'm entering this music contest for a thing called Kingdombound, and I need to record one of my songs to try out and I need this baby done by May 13th!! Thats like a month away, so I need answers ASAP! Anyways, to help, I got my very first MIDI controller, but it has a problem. When I hit the note on the keyboard, theres like a 1 1/2 second delay, and who can play like that?! I looked everywhere for help, but couldn't scratch anything up! So if I could have some help, that would be a life saver! Please respond ASAP!!! Thanks! In a super rush.. -Jonah

Well, you could start by telling your system specs. What soundcard, what drivers? What is your latency set to? Have you done the tutorials and gotten aquainted with the manual and all settings in the Options dialogue?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Jonah, forgive me for being direct, but since you are short on time, we need some detailed information from you. Please do not make us pry it from you. I have to assume you are using your built-in sound card. In general, these are not well suited for recording and soft synths. I don't kow of any that support ASIO, so if you select that, you will have no I/O and no sound. However, depending on what your OS is, you may have some acceptable options. We know you have the Q49 controller. What is your OS(XP,Vista, Windows7)? Are you using Home Studio 7? What Soft Synths are you using? What is your CPU and RAM? Do you have ready access to $100-200( for a suitable sound card/interface)? Have you connected the Q49 via USB? Above all, do not panic. It makes it hard to stay focused. Have you done the tutorials and at least browsed the help files? it takes some time, but will save you time in the long run. Even if the help files don't make sense right away, if you have a question, you may remember seeing something there, and you can often solve a problem more quickly. Dig in, keep it fun, and if it starts to get the best of you, step away from it for a while. Watch TV, play a game, do anything, but something different. Clear your head, then come back to it. You can do this, but it's going to take a little bit of work. Good luck. We're here to help, but it's ultimately up to you to make it happen.

Right. It's the Latency inherent in all stock sound cards. They are just not fast enough. If you switch back to WDM or MME driver mode (you may have to close/re-open SONAR after the change), the name of your sound card should appear in the in and out of the track, like 'RealTeK HD Audio Line In' and 'RealTek HD Audio Speakers'.

Okay, thanks guys! I figured it out! And now my midi is working just great! Thanks! But just one more question. When I play my midi or anything at all, there are crackles, not effecting the tempo, but just in the sound. It only happened when I switched it to ASIO, is this fixable? And I am using Home studio 7, and I have Windows Vista. Again, thanks for all your help!! you guys really made a difference! :)

you can try to reduce the popping/clicking noises by moving the latency slider to the SAFE side in OPTIONS>AUDIO. but your best option is to get a better soundcard like RobertB suggested above. check my website for soundcard recommendations if you're interested in getting a soundcard.

Okay, but when I switched it to ASIO, the latency slider disappeared. Is that supposed to happen?? And my buffers are all the way up. So does that leave me with getting a new soundcard?

yes, that's supposed to happen. you cannot change the buffers from the window in SHS using ASIO mode. are you using ASIO4ALL? I'm not sure how you're getting the onboard soudncard to work at all in ASIO mode unless you have installed ASIO4ALL. if you're using ASIO4ALL then click on the ASIO button and that will bring up the ASIO4ALL GUI. you can adjust your buffers there. if that doesn't work then yes, you'll need a better soundcard. I have recommendations on my website.

okay, well I don't think I'm using ASIO4ALL. It just says "M-Audio Mobilepre ASIO" (I use an M-Audio Mobilepre for my interface" There is a button that says ASIO pannel, but when I click it, it takes me to the control panel for the whole computer. How do I get ASIO4ALL?

ok, I have to complain a little bit, songman, you've left out a very important piece of information the entire thread - we needed to know you were using the mobilepre and this is the first time you've mentioned it. the mobilepre IS a soundcard and you won't need another one. you also don't need ASIO4ALL since you're using the mobilepre. the mobilepre has its own native ASIO drivers. ASIO4ALL is a "band aid" for onboard soundcards that don't have good drivers to begin with. so, DON'T install ASIO4ALL. use what you have. now - when you say clicking on the ASIO button brings up the control panel for the whole computer - that doesn't make sense. but there's another way to deal with it. close SHS. click on the little red and black "M" in your systray (bottom right hand corner of your windows screen). that will bring up the mobilepre's software panel. find the HARDWARE BUFFERS and change it to the LOWEST ONE possible. then close the m-audio panel and re-open SHS. now what is happening?

Beagle, there is no Red and Black "M" on the bottom right hand corner of my window's screen. -__- dangit, it seems like this just ain't workin..
