RAR files are opened with WinRAR.  Here's some online info about it:

    WinRAR

I've had it for years, and don't know how I'd get along with it.

Once you have it on your computer, that second part of the installer will kick in automatically after the first part is installed, without you having to take a second action manually.

7zip is a good free zip/rar utility ....and free.

Google 7zip CNET and you will find download links. If you have a 64bit OS, you will need 7zip x64.

    Did ya get it?
I had the same thing once and did use the trial version of 7zip to finish the install before getting the actual DVD set in.

Yup, I thought the same thing when I saw the .rar file. They mention it in the installation instructions.

Yes, we're saying that the installation of part two is triggered automatically by part one - I've had WinRAR for years, so knew the .rar file wouldn't have trouble opening.  I don't know what happens if you don't have a utility on your computer that can open rars.

Yep, that's right ... it's not "free".  I also downloaded it in an emergency one time, but did not buy it.  Of course I removed it from the PC.

Really? Because I've NEVER had the window pop up in 8-12 months, and I have it on 5+ machines.

    From their site:

License 7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions. Check license information here: 7-Zip license.
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip.

Sorry, I couldn't let it go (the I have to be right side of me), but this is definitely FREE! I check all the people's machines I've put in on (in addition to my 5) - not one pop-up, not one anything.

Yes, 7zip is free. So is Peazip. Winrar however is not. Someone in the beginning of the thread mentioned winrar. Which is NOT free. I believe that is what chuckebaby meant. But 7zip and peazip can both open RAR files and are free. I like peazip better than 7zip. It just feels a bit more "integrated" to me.

Concerning the installation. As far as I can remember, I didn't have any utility for rar files installed when I installed Sonar on my DAW (which was freshly installed), and it installed fine.

The installer will handle the .rar file on it's own. End users don't/won't need to install WinRAR or 7-Zip.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah, Hockey you're right - I've just gone back to my machine to look for 7Zip and couldn't find it.  I swore I had it but have obviously confused it with BitZipper.  Apologies to you and OP.

Ah!  Nice!--Yes, I'm sure that helps a lot of people.  Since most of us need and so have some sort of unzipper on our computers, we've been assuming the reason part 2 of the installer was working was because we had those utilities.  It would help clear up confusion if it was mentioned on the download page that a special program isn't needed for unzipping, AND that part 2 is triggered automatically by part 1.  Quite a few posts crop up with users needing instructions about what to do.

7zip - definitely free.  I can confirm that also.  I grabbed it for some reason some time ago, and it's remained free and operable.  Totally wrong info that it's not free.

I brought up WinRAR on this thread - I've had that for so many years now, I'd forgotten that I paid for it.
