Layla 24/Windows 7 loud static noise/help
Hey all, just got a new computer that I had built by cyberpower, I installed my Layla 24/96 in an extra pci slot, Updated drivers to 8.5 (latest for windows 7 and vista) and set it up for use. For the most part the sound card works fine, for example I played an entire album (mp3) with out a problem. However when watching youtube vids almost everytime about 2 minutes or so into the vid I get a crazy static noise that is terrible and it will not go away until I turn the layla off. I loaded Sonar 8 up to see if I would have any luck....recorded a single guitar track for about 3 minutes, no probs, after the second or 3rd time of playback I get this loud static noise again (similar to what you hear from a TV that has been changed to a channel that doesn't exist or off air) I know this is not a software issue but there may be a clue to something...When the noise starts in Sonar during playback, I can click on the "input echo" button (turn it off and on) for the track and get the noise to stop, however it will rear it's head again and again sporadically. I have disabled all other sound cards on board, tried disabling network connections, antivirus, didn't stop it. Here is what I'm running if it might help..... Processor - Intel I7-2600k (Sandy Bridges) 3.40 GHZ 8M LGA 1155 Mother Board - Gigabyte P67A-UD3-b3 Intel P67 Crossfire DDR3 USB3.0 SATA3 LGA1155 Windows 7 home premium 64 bit 4 gig ddr3 1600 mhz memory Hard Drives - 2-500 gig SATA III 6GB/S 7200 RPM 16MB cache I ran the Layla previously on an AMD 64 Athlon and did not have these issues. If the card is going bad, it is very coincidental that it decides to crap out when I change it to a new computer. I recorded and used the Layla the same day I changed it to the new computer and it was doing fine as always. Any help would be appreciated I have done all the troubleshooting I know to do and it has to be an issue between the card and the computer. BTW the onboard soundcard plays the vids fine and has no issues...ruling out my speakers etc. The Layla is set up to work at 48k sample rate and Sonar is as well. In Sonar I'm using the AISO drivers 48/24 Dave.

Update...switched over to WDM drivers and having much better results. No static noise in playback now at all, but still dropping out especially when adding effects or creating a bus etc. I really wanted to use the ASIO drivers for obvious reasons, but thats ok, had to use WDM on my old set up also. In Sonar I am only experimenting with one track...a single acoustic track. I'm getting drop outs when adding new effects, creating a bus, turning a bus on... etc. (all while playback is going of course). In Audio Options my playback timing master and record timing master are shown as "Analog out 1-8 [WaveRT] 1/2" This threw me a curve since I was looking for Layla something...But the Advanced Tab shows Layla...however it shows 5 in and 5 out the Layla is 8 in 8 out????? The Drivers Tab shows the same "Analog out 1-8 [WaveRT] 1/2" The Drivers Profiles shows Layla24 (5in 5 out)?????? My buffer size is 4ms. CPU has yet to surpass 8% I upped the buffer size to 8 ms and lessened my dropouts. I was able to cause a crash (a single tone that was constant not like the hissing static sound before) after adding compression, eq, phase, and reverb to the single channel and cloning the track about 5 times and playing it back...(kinda putting it to a test) Now I need to move to a different thread since the Hardware issue is kinda resolved (I hope) Dave.

IK Obi Do you have any wireless devices on the computer? Like usb wifi adapter? Yes, and I'm sorry for the delay to your comment....I disabled them in device manager a. nd tried a ton of other things....Never got the laya running right....I gave up and installed my firebox and it worked just wonderful....I have taken a million notes and will be sending Echo a help ticket. It seems to be an issue between my system and the latest (and only) update for Win 7 by Echo....Can't complain about Echo though...I have had lots of use from the Layla and It's great that they are still making drivers for a product that has been discontinued for many years. Thanx for your help everyone, and again sorry It's took so long to comment back...I have very little spare time these days and I'm thankful for it :)

At least yours is working. As soon as I upgraded to Win 7, I can't get any input or output. Driver loaded fine, slider gadgets integrate with Windows controls fine, but performing a Control Panel sound "Test" results in a "device busy" failure. No apps will work.. all other drivers are unloaded and no services are using the device. I even went through every possible sample rate combination .. no luck. I'd hate to have to upgrade again - The AudioFire12 is cool, but just don't need the aggravation at the moment. I've sent an email to Echo tech support... it's been over a week... nada.

IK Obi Wow weird, mines working great but its overkill for what I need. Is your system similar to mine....mother board, processor etc.? On another note...my computer came setup in Raid 0....I don't know if this has any bearing on my situation but I am changing the configuration to 2 separate hard drives and will try to re-install the layla again. I think I have an XP disc around here somewhere, so I may load it on one of the drives if I don't have success from Win 7. That should nail down a problem between layla hardware and the mother board/chipset/drivers blah blah blah.... If I had known better I wouldn't have had my new computer configured to Raid 0 pre-shipment.....live and learn . ( :- /) BTW...Layla 24 is a bit overkill for what I do also, since I normally only record single tracks at a time and the little Firebox can do this easily, However the sound quality in the analog to digital converters from the Layla is (IMO) far superior to the Firebox....the console also offers more advantages in Layla (meters for ex.) In short I really really love the Layla card. It's the best card I've ever owned and I would gladly purchase from Echo over anyone else if I had the bones to do so, based on their converters alone...not to mention the Layla is a very "user friendly" device :) Dave.

I'm hoping to upgrade my DAW in the next few months and also have a Layla 24 (and love it) so hopefully I won't have any issues... BTW - Here's how I use my Layla (quickly copied from another thread - in case some parts read funny - lol) - I don't like to rewire things... Inputs: 1&2 - These connect to two of the sub-busses on my main mixer - These are the primary recording sources (so two mono tracks or one stereo track) 3&4 - These connect to the two other sub-busses on my main mixer - These create the "main mix" (and generally get routed back to the headphone amp) 5&6 - I use these when I want to record something at the highest quality (i.e., without going through patchbays or mixers) 7&8 - Unused except when I need to record more than two tracks at a time (only happens when others are playing with me) Outputs: 1&2 - These connect to my Alesis M1 Active monitors (on each side of the PC monitor) 3&4 - These go to the main mixer to be heard with any other "live" sound (being carefull not to create feedback loops!) 5&6 - These go to the headphone amp "main mix" channel 7&8 - These go to the headphone amp "recording" channel (the headphone amp allows you to adjust how much of the main mix and recording you hear)
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Thanks craigb, Im still having issues with my system and the layla, but I have another card that is working fine. I'm also changing from a raid 0 setup and starting all over. I dont think the raid has anything to do with the issues but I don't like it anyway lol! Thanx for the input :)
