Tips for recording drums/percussion instruments

How far away should I set up the mic?
Should I use a condenser mic?
Any tips would be very helpful, thanks!

a drum kit uses many different mic's
    condensers are more for overheads
but not limited to..kick drums are usualy done with a shure beta 52 or other specialty mics
a sure beta  condenser98 will work nice on toms..
the sm57 is an all around good drum mic.
there are a lot of interchangables for drums..but also a strick guidline as well.you can experiment.

then i would find the sweet spot in the room where all your drums will sound about equal volume..this is usually about 5 feet off the floor about 5 feey away from the kit..try experimenting with moving it around after a take or two till you find the right spot..this is by no means proffesional and your going to get a at best hal as recording.good luck man.

    ps.the samson q8 is a dynamis mic

Yes, move the mic around to find the sweetspot.  I suspect the challenge will be to capture the low end (and power) of the bass drum.  If you can use the second mic use ... one overhead and close mic the bass drum.
