DEFINE "GOOD"...

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO SPEND?

DO YOU WANT A SOUNDCARD,  PCI WITH BREAKOUT BOX, FIREWIRE, OR USB INTERFACE?

HOW MANY INPUTS AT ONCE?

THERE ARE SO MANY QUESTIONS THAT HAVE TO BE ANSWERED BEFORE ANYONE COULD EVEN BEGIN....

Since you are running 64bit you need to make sure it has good driver support. Stick with the known good brands.  On the low price end Echo and M-Audio are good, in the mid range Motu and Focusrite, and at the high end RME and Lynx.  You can get a pro quality PCI card from about $100 to over $1000.  My Lynx II card was just under $1000 off e-bay but I haven't had to upgrade it :-)   In the "sane" price range the M-Audio Audiophile 192 and Echo Gina 3G are very nice quality and have good driver support.

Cards live and die by driver support, it does no good to have great hardware is there is no drivers the next time you change OS.

One of the bigger cards at a appropriate price, the XONAR DX is a acceptable agenda for those who wish something bigger than onboard audio after afire a huge aperture in the abridged ! Its got abundant SNR and appropriate arch buzz addition it comes with an SPDIF optical out adapter too. Priced at $89 it provides acceptable value.

Your VS100 is your interface - or sound card.  It records and plays back your music audio, which is what we are concerned about around here.  Your friend needs a refresher course for computer music production.  Your onboard soundcard will work fine for windows warnings, gaming, etc.  Keep your vs 100 saved for MUSIC.

However, more RAM is always good.  Also, a second hard drive to spool your music audio (linear) from while the C: drive takes care of SONAR if you don't already have one.

What do you need a better PC sound card for?  It is kind of a waste.

Creative cards, although OK sonic wise, will drop a lot of drivers and other crud you don't want on a music production computer.  If music production is a secondary consideration and you want to game, surf etc. on your computer too, you are likely to suffer performance problems w/ music.  By all means carry on.

An interface is a soundcard. I think you're confusing something. As mentioned above, you only need one proper soundcard in a PC and you already got the VS.
NOBODY on this forum recommends Soundblasters, but Creatives E-MU is OK.

As several have mentioned.... the Vstudio 100 is the interface/soundcard you will use with Sonar X1. It has everything you need all built in.

No need to upgrade the computer's sound card. That's just a waste of money.

Once you get the VS100 set up properly, it will use it's drivers and the computer sound card will use different audio drivers. They should co-exist peacefully with each other.

These guys are correct.  you don't need another soundcard or sound interface (they're the same thing).  you just need to set up the VS100 correctly.

and to add - don't listen to this guy.  it's actually just a spam bot.  what it's promoting is the link in his signature, not really the advice on the soundcard which is not necssarily good advice anyway.

Your cheap sound card will not have any affect on your VS-100!

Like all others here are suggesting, don't even bother updating your sound card - just learn to use the VS-100. It is a great sound card.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

and I would further add - don't use the cheap soundcard in the computer anyway - just route all of your sound thru the vs-100 through some quality near fields if you have them and just use that for everything.

some people like to keep both the cheap soundcard on the computer working AND the good soundcard (VS100 in your case) both, but personally I just use the good soundcard for all sound coming from the computer whehter it be from sonar or from WMP or youtube or whatever - it all comes thru my $500 soundcard instead of my $0.50 motherboard soundard.  sounds much better that way!

I don't know much about AMD processors.  if it's comparable to a dual or quad core intel then I'm sure it will work fine.

Re:BEST SOUND CARD ? 2011/04/19 18:19:06 (permalink)
As you are just starting out, consider using what you already have, and not spending additional money until after you have a better idea of what you will be aiming for in terms of music styles/inputs and outputs needed/number of samples or softsyths used/etc.  You may find out that you need a better computer (especially if you end up using lots of large sample libraries), but if all you will be doing is recording a few live tracks, most computers can do that.

It is very easy to spend money on stuff you end up not using or needing.  In general, it is also better - if budget allows - to buy a good piece of gear and stay with it for a long time, rather than to buy cheap, replace with a bit better piece, replace again with a bit better piece... and end up spending far more in the long run than you would have by simply buying something good in the first place.
