Background Vocals in mixer/effects?

How do you set up your background vocal channels in Sonar? Do you treat them as individual tracks, or do you send the dry, unprocessed tracks to a bus, where they get send and insert effects put on that bus?

what I do personally is put them on their own individual tracks, use sends for processing parallel compression and reverb, then I also send the outputs of those tracks to their own bus for volume control and any "global" processing if any.

I have them (usually) on separate tracks to a bus.  A little bus comp, slather in reverb (depends upon the backing, but that is most often what I do).

Likewise, I always put mine on separate tracks, for separate processing, then feed them to a bus where they might get a little bit more processing.

If you know from the outset that you're going to compress your tracks, it makes sense to do it a little at a time, at different parts of the chain. Several small amounts of compression are better than piling it all on at one stage only.

I use the bus technique also to sort of weld together acoustic guitar rhythm tracks. Separate tracks to the bus seems to give a much better impression of the guitars in the same room or space. As said, Watch the Compression! Also, be very light handed as far as reverb settings.

I think of it like painting a door.

You don't put one massive thick coat on and be done with it, you build it up with separate coats ands get a much better finish.
