Kontakt - Copy/clone instrument within Kontakt instance?

What is the easiest way to clone/copy an instrument within a Kontakt instance?

For example, let's say you have a trumpet sound loaded which you like, and you want to have two copies of it, so that you can have two trumpets with their own midi channel, panning, volume, etc.  How would you copy/clone the first trumpet instrument to a second one?  (Again, this is all within the Kontakt instance, not within Sonar's Track View)

Are you forced to save the trumpet instrument (without samples) to a temporary directory, and then load it for the second instrument?

Thanks!

If you are using Kontakt as a VST in SONAR, all you have to do is load the same instrument into two separate MIDI channels in the Kontakt VST. Then SONAR can treat them as two entirely different instruments.

If you are using Kontakt without SONAR, then you should take your question to the Native Instruments forum.

I am no Kontakt guru, but I suspect the only way to do it is to save the instrument (right-click on the name and select "save instrument as...") and then load it.

I had a need to do something like this just last night. I had two voices loaded into Kontakt and decided that I needed to separate them into two instances of Kontakt. It sure would have been nice to be able to drag 'n drop the instrument from one Kontakt instance to the other.

Yeah, or ctrl-drag to clone them within an instance.

When you "save as" the instrument, do you uncheck samples, so only save the main instrument file?  And you need to save that inside your project's directory, and not delete it, because Kontakt uses the new instrument file rather than the preset.  Is that correct?

Save it in the same folder where you got the instrument to begin with. This will not only make it easier to find next time you need it, but also assures that the instrument will find the samples easily because they're in the same relative location. And you are correct: it is not necessary to copy the samples, just the instrument definition file.

Just be sure to give it a different name so it doesn't overwrite the original.
