Drum maps with session drummer 3

heya all , a ferw question for ya.
Is there a way to have session drummer assigned to a drum map so i can load it in the piano view and have it show me notes like it was in the DR-008 with piano view?

I can't seem to wrap my head around session drummer and Midi.. are the session drummer step sequencer steps differant than the piano view midi?

seems like they are NOT interchangeable?
what am i missing here i could never seem to get it down.

Yes, SONAR includes a Drum Map for Session Drummer. The easiest way to work with Session Drummer is as follows...

Choose Insert > Soft Synth > Session Drummer 3.
In the dialog box, choose the Simple Instrument Track option.

SONAR will automatically insert the synth, create a track for it and assign it to a drum map. Now when you open the track in either the Piano Roll view or the Step Sequencer you will see the instrument names.

There is a keyboard map at the bottom of the section "Using the Drum Kit" in the Session Drummer help (F1 with the Session Drummer UI in focus to display). The notes are also displayed when right-clicking on the instruments in the Drumkit view and the pads in the Mixer view.

If I add Session Drummer 3 as a synth and I go to the piano roll view the drum names are there. However, if I right click on a name, select configure and go to the drum map manager, there is none. My goal is to re-assign which pad in my kit triggers which sound in Session Drummer 3. It seems I can control the output (which sound each drum makes), but not the input (which pad triggers which drum).

I could just use a drum map, but I don't know how to assign each drum to a separate track. Can anyone assist?

Session Drummer 3 shows note names in the Notes pane. There is no drum map used. SONAR calls a function provided in the VST specification. Very few synths implement this function, Session Drummer 3 is one of them. Drum maps appear in the pane above the Note Pane.

You may create a drum map to reassign your controller data to Session Drummer. The notes that trigger pads in Session Drummer are hard coded. What those notes actually play is up to the sfz file and samples loaded in Session Drummer. The per-pad audio track assignments are made in Session Drummer and have nothing to do with drum maps.

To speed things up consider starting with a GM or Session Drummer 2 map and adjust as needed.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I apologize for my ignorance in this, but I am an old school drummer trying to work in a new world. Can you please take a moment to clarify a bit? What is a GM? Are you saying that drum maps are available for Session Drummer 2? If so, how do I get them?

One problem I am attempting to solve is that I have a cymbal on my kit that does not trigger a sound in Session Drummer 3 and I can't figure out how to reassign it to one of the existing outputs. That's why I thought a drum map would be the better way to go.

Any additional advice would be appreciated. Again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge. By the way, if there are videos, classes or basic lessons available, I'd love to know about them.

    Many thanks.

GM is General MIDI. Session Drummer 2 and 3 mostly follow the GM drum map. There are quite a few drum maps included with SONAR. The path to the drum maps is shown in SONAR Preferences > File > Folder Locations.

This video might be some help. I made it a few years ago but it still applies.

The video wont get you all the way there but it might help with the basics.
To get more in depth you'll need to create a drum map to tailor your own needs.
But as Steve said, There are quite a few drum maps already in sonar (over 100+).
So you should be able to get close.

By the way, Chuck, I had already discovered that first video and it helped me tremendously!! In addition to doing a great job explaining the process, you also have a great voice for audio. Thank you so much!
