solid state drives?
$275 for 120g INTEL sata lll solid state drive on Newegg. Is it best to put programs and system on the solid state or data? I would think you would want recording to be going to the solid state. I have no experience or knowledge of them except they are a lot faster so help please. John

I use SSD's for both, actually. I'm only using the other drives as storage space these days. OS is on a 64bg drive. My working audio drive is a 64gb drive. And I've got several TB in storage. All I have to do is drag the project I want to work on to the SSD and get busy. And 64gb is plenty of space, as long as you're not trying to permanently store data there. You could get two 64gb drives for about $100 less than the single 120gb.

So... I just ordered a ocz 64g vertex 2. They don't make 64 vertex 3 and I'd have to get a new board for that anyway. The vertex 3's supposedly twice as fast as the 2's. Just got one to try cause probably take me three weeks to get my system on it working off and on in spare time. So tell me, how do you drag and drop projects? John

INTEL or OCZ are good. Any SSD are faster any old HD... Speed is not a problem.....it like comparing rockets.. Who is the fastes...? Or this one?

But IIRC it's only a short while ago when the writing speed of SSD was slower than HDD which made them not so good for recording (?).

I don't use them. they're too expensive for my taste. but Brandon Ryany [CAKEWALK] swears they are excellent for sonar.

ohhey said... Many of the reviews I see online by buyers tell the story of high speed but short life. Might be a good idea to wait till the failure rate problem gets solved. I've owned the Intel X25-M Sata II drive now for almost two years and it works fantastic as my OS drive for my DAW. Could it fail? Sure. Could my non-SSD drives fail on my as well? Yep. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat! This last month I recently upgraded my non-DAW machine (Intel 2600K with the SATA III Intel SSD). I've seen much quicker boot up times and app startups. I have no plans on going back to non-SSD for me. Tom

Well... my 60 is up and running with the os and programs on it. REALLY fast... Sonar pops up in a second or 2. BUT... having a hell of time switching Sonar over to looking on the other drive for all the data. Changed everything in Global/folders but Sonar keeps complaining and warning that switching things could be real bad. It still seems to look first where it thinks things should be rather in the global/folders paths. Don't know what that's about. John
