PROBLEM SOLVED: Bit and sample rate won't stay changed in new projects.

All of a sudden I cannot change bit rate or sample rate in x1 or 8.3. I have tried everything I know how to do and I have read relevant posts and still cannot solve this problem.   I have used sonar for 8 years with this hardware unit and never had this problem. To clarify.  I can start a new project. Set rates at 88200 and 24 bit. Hit apply.  All is well. If I close the project and reopen it is when I get the messages and changed rates.  The message I get is something to the effect 'check to see if something is using drivers, and/or hardware does not support what I am requesting, Cakewalk is reverting back to 44 and 16'.
I can play any project that was previously recorded at any bit or sample rate. My hardware is ESI wamirack 192X PCI.  I have no problem with Studio One Artist with changing sample and bit rate.
Could this be the problem?  On the day the problem started I downloaded a couple of computer monitoring systems ie, fan control, cpu temp etc.  I deleted those programs and it still doesn't work properly and as I mentioned it didn't affect S1.
Most of the problems I have had in the past have been user error, hope it is this time too!! any ideas what could be going on?  I do not have the last two quickfixes.  I have a PC and Q6600.  No antivirus. Do not use computer on internet. XP.
I have checked computer control panel to be sure ESI is default hardware.

Not much help but, even just X1, for me, without any patches a;ways saved the bit rtate and sample rate. Also thru all patches including QF's.
I use the internet, speedfan, Bitdefender AV, etc. No issue as you mention. Sure seems like it would be a driver issue though. Hopefully some of the guru's will chime in

Thanks Stratman, I was thinking drivers but the danged thing works fine with S1.  I'll reinstall them today though....Speedfan, coretemp and a much bigger NVIDIA program is what i installed. Then I unistalled them all. Sure is coincidental because I never have trouble with this computer or Sonar for that matter.  I could just record everything in 44.1 but I really want the 24 bits.
I have only had X1 installed for a couple of weeks.  I was one of those that sat out the storm until it passed.  Hope it has passed!..  It's weird 8.3 having a conflict as well.

Don't think Studio One matters here-or at least for now anyway.
It would seem, Sonar thinks your soundcard (or whatever it is looking at as your sound card) is "not" capable of more than 16 bit. I don't know near as much as many of the folks here. Just relaying what I have read over the years. Is the "share drivers" box unchecked in Sonar?
Wish I could be more help. Sorry

Well for some reason its working in X1! but not in 8.3.  Don't really care right now just glad to have X1.  Here is what the actual pop up message says  "The default sample and rate and bit depth is not supported by on or more soundcards. The default has been reset to 44.1 and 16 bits".  Also have gotten " The following drivers either do not support the current audio format or are in use in another application.  Please choose whether you want to disable them". It had my drivers listed.  But X1 works so on I go.  Thanks for your help Stratman!

UPDATE! now I have 8.3 working fine.  Not sure what had them both out of synch.   All drivers including realtek were checked and had been functioning fine with that setting but now I only have ESI drivers checked and daw is working.  I tried that before in fact many times and it wouldn't work but is now.  Whatever!! Glad its up.
