MC5 and Midi Sys Ex: Supported?
I recently purchased an Alesis SR18 and will begin programming patterns and songs with it soon. I noticed that the songs and patterns can be saved and retrieved by pushing and pulling the Midi Sys Ex data to and from a storage device. Is MC5 capable of managing my PC as the storage device. My USB interface to the PC is the Tascam US144mkii which has a Midi-in connector. Thanks for any help, suggestions and/or advice.

I don't have access to my computer which has MC5 on it right now to verify, but I believe it does have sysx capability. I know MC4 and below did. in MC5, go to VIEW>SYSX if it's there and not greyed out then you have access to sysx commds, if it's not there or if it's greyed out then MC5 doesn't have the capability.

Thanks, Beagle. I'll check it out this afternoon. One other question: assuming I have that capability, do I need MIDI connectivity all the way to the PC? Or is connectivity likely sufficient from the Alesis to the Tascam US144mkii, and then USB from the Tascam to the PC? I'm thinking no but hoping yes.

You simply plug the interface into the PC via the USB cable. You plug the midi keyboard/controller into the interface and run the software setup disc, select the correct drivers and you should be fine. The purpose of the interface is to be the interface between the midi device and the computer as well as the interface device between the mic/guitar and the computer. hope that helps you to understand it better.

Reggie - if you have the Alesis plugged into the Tascam via MIDI cables (input and output) and if you have the Tascam MIDI ports selected in MC5 as your INPUT and OUTPUT for MIDI DEVICES then it will work fine that way as long as SYSX is supported in MC5, which I think it is. check in MC for the tascam midi to be selected by going to OPTIONS>MIDI DEVICES and make sure the tascam is selected and at the top of the list (and probably should be the only thing selected) for INPUT and OUTPUT.

Thanks, guys. Guitar Hacker -- I have the Tascam set up as my interface to the PC via USB. I've used that for some time as the link between a mixer and my PC. The MIDI connectivity is new since I just picked up the Alesis machine. I'm new to MIDI and sysex. Beagle -- I need to pick up some MIDI cables, probably tomorrow. I'll look into it as soon as I get them and get back and let you know how it all went. Update: Under VIEWS there is a SYSX. So that answers that part of the equation. I need a couple of MIDI cables now. Thanks again.

my web site has some info based on MC4 & 5 that deal with midi that you might find helpful if you're new to it..... Once you learn it you're gonna love it.

I was pretty sure they didn't take SYSX capability away, but since I couldn't confirm and I know they took other things away between MC4 and MC5 I wasn't sure.

Ok...here's where I am with this. I have purchased two MIDI cables and have connected the Alesis to the Tascam US144mkii, both in and out. When I tap a pad on the Alesis I can see the MIDI-IN LED on the Tascam blink to indicate data getting to the Tascam from the Alesis. However, from within MC5, I have no MIDI-source selection to choose from. Bear in mind that MC5 does see the Tascam as a USB source for inputing music from my mixer. However, MC5 does not see the Tascam as a valid (or invalid) MIDI source. Thoughts?

is the tascam not showing up in the OPTIONS>MIDI DEVICES as valid inputs and outputs to be set?

No, it doesn't. Still tinkering around to see if there is a step I may have missed during configuration of the Tascam interface but as of right now, no. By the way, I am interfacing the Tascam to a beefy HP desktop running Windows 7. Lots of memory and diskspace. Nothing much else running on the PC.

THe computer plays a part of course, but the interface and it's drivers determine if it works or not. Be sure the cables on the midi are properly connected. On the interface the MIDI IN should be connected to the MIDI OUT (on the keyboard/controller) with a midi cable from the keyboard. In my studio, that is the ONLY connection I have. I do NOT send the MIDI back to the interface. The blinking light on the interface tells you it is seeing the midi data. Now you must complete the path into the computer and MC5 from the interface. Be sure the drivers are updated to the most recent version. Restart the computer. The interface should show up as an available MIDI option and also in the audio as an AUDIO option. Select the interface in both areas and save them as defaults. You should not have to do that again. It took me the better part of a week or two to get my rig functional. So stick with it. ALSO: be sure to check if the interface you use, has a software control window. My Saffire does. It was actually the reason I was not getting sound into my DAW. It controlled the input & output levels and monitoring of those signals. Once I got it properly configured, everything worked. I had the same kind of problems going on....

the cables won't matter if the device isn't showing up in the MIDI DEVICES. that's a driver problem. If I haven't mentioned this before I'm sure I haven't said it yet today: Tascam drivers and software are crap! they apparently can't code their way out of a paper bag. I do not have any tascam soundcard devices listed on my website because they can't seem to get their drivers right for everyone. on some systems they work, on others they don't. reggie - what OS are you using? do you have the correct version of drivers from tascam's website for your OS?

So the standing advice here is that if you just bought this interface...... and it's within the "no hassle return" period..... make haste and return it in favor of an M-Audio or Focusrite interface.

No, I've had this device for a year now so for the time being I'm kind of stuck with it. I'll see what I can do to make it work. If I can't then I'll start looking for alternatives. Beagle the cables won't matter if the device isn't showing up in the MIDI DEVICES. that's a driver problem. I'm running Windows 7. I went to the Tascam site when I installed the HW to make sure I had the most recent drivers, at least at the time. I'll look to see whether there's an update. I think there may be because I recently checked and downloaded their latest drivers and they had a mid-2010 date, if I remember correctly. The DAW is in the basement and I'm up in the study. I'll head down there later to check it out. I'll let you guys know what I've found probably tomorrow. Got to watch the Bruins kick some Philly Flyers butts and then go play myself. Thanks for hanging with me on this.

Guys...my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I've been working on other things and got so involved this just totally slipped off my radar until recently. So, nothing has worked and I'm beginning to believe it's what Beagle said: Tascam just doesn't have good midi support in their drivers. I haven't taken this up with them but I guess I will have to. If you have any suggestions in the meantime I'll give them a shot as well.

which driver mode are you using? if WDM, try ASIO and see if the Tascam's midi ports will show up in that mode.

So, I am in business! I upgraded the drivers to the most current available, 2.02, and I have MIDI connectivity now. I haven't tried to move any SYSEX data from the Alesis to the PC yet, but I'm sure I will be able to now that I have MIDI connectivity. Thanks for the suggestions. I should be all set. If I run into any difficulties, I know where to turn. Reggie

very good. I only send midi data in one direction..... from the keyboard to the DAW. That works for what I need. It will go in both directions.... have a nice day.
