Empty (Hollow) Midi Notes = No sound

Midi notes are blank empty shells of themselves and no sound.
I sound on sound -recorded six Midi tracks (with mute previous takes) all on one track...I have recorded like this before.

However this time 3 out of 6 tracks are Empty (Hollow) Midi Notes = No sound I setup separate midi tracks and a separate synth moved the 'odd tracks' and they are still 'hollow empty' shells of what are midi notes.

If I open the clips in PRV mode they sound if I hold down the note, but I can't seem to get them to fill in and sound on there own ...also if I write a note it is "hollow" and soundless as well...velocity and duration are great and the velocity tails are showing in color.

I am running Dimension Pro and Sample Tron.

The performances are from an out of town guest keyboardist and I want to keep all performances...

Please advise

MIDI doesn't have sound in itself.  MIDI is only data used to trigger sounds from a synth.  what synth are you using for your output?

Dimension Pro - Sample Tron to name a couple...I am aware that these are only midi info..the problem is they are there, but hollow and "command-less" if I press a hollow note it sounds?? if I write a new note it is hollow and  offers no midi commands??

I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by "hollow" then.  can you be more specific or state it in a different way?

Beagle, I think he may be referring to muted MIDI notes, which are displayed as outlines with no fill color.

jonny, make sure the MIDI clip isn't muted (it will have a circle with a slash through it in the upper-left corner of the clip, like a do-not-enter sign). If it is, select it and press "Q".

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Unfortunately not that simple of a fix....I have looked at it every angle I can think of and it makes no sense.

I had problems with certain drumpads that notes had to short duration.

I ran a CAL script that set everything to minimum 40 ticks or similar. Then it worked just fine.

Make a test on a note or a couple and see to that it's duration is enough.

Usually you can test with scrub tool in PRV.

If you need to fix the track in one go, I can look up the script I made.

    Ah, OK.  that makes sense.

Jonny - if bit's suggestion didn't work, then try going to the track view highlight the whole MIDI track that you're working with, then right click on the "track" (not the properties but on the "MIDI data track picture" on the right) and select BOUNCE TO CLIPS.  then go look at the very beginning of the track and see if there's a red circle with a line thru it.  if there is, then while the track picture is highlighted, hit "Q" again and see if that solves it.

If you recorded S-o-S with muting previous takes, you might have multiple layers in the track. You can confirm this by [Track view] Layers > Show Layers or the Layers > Show Layers command on the Track pane right-click menu.

When you do that, it should show all but the most recent layer muted (a red slash-circle indicator in the upper left of each layer). Possibly, if you started recording another take and stopped recording before playing anything, then all layers might be muted.

Anyway, what if the notes of a muted layer are showing in PRV on top of the only unmuted layer? (Can this happen?) How about trying this:
To show/hide events in muted clips
Click the Piano Roll view View menu and choose Hide Muted Clips.

    Re:Empty (Hollow) RESOLVED! 2011/04/30 11:36:55 (permalink)
    RESOLVED!!!!
Big Thanks to: SH (Silver Member from Metro Detroit) and I quote:

"Looks like you had the mute tool selected (Ctrl-F10).  Unmute the notes (not clip)"

A little swipe across the top with the "M" tool and I was alive!!
    Thanks to all who helped.
I use that 'tool' all the time in audio....I wonder if the sound on sound record w/previous track muted created the same type of mute??
Or if "I" did in fact mute with the 'tool' at the tracking and forgot all about it.
Any which way lesson learned and a very mucho "Thank YOU" Again Jonny
