Can we use DX FXs under Win7?

I heard that eventually Cakewalk will fix it so we can use DX FXs with Win7. I was wondering if there's been any word on when that may be, if ever? We sure have accumulated a lot of DX FXs over the years with Sonar, so it seems like such a waste to let those drop.

I'm particularly interested in using the Sonitus FX. I also heard the Cakewalk was offering the VST versions of the Sonitus FX for loyal users, yet I find no evidence of this. Also is there a way to change a DX FX into a VST FX, like a VST wrapper in Win7?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm still not able to use Win7, because of a driver problem with my Layla 24.  So I'm just looking ahead and planning and redoing my templates, so when I do the shift, my plug-ins will work.

Is there an issue with DX in Windows 7?  I have not seen it mentioned here before, maybe I missed it?

There is a problem using 32 bit DX in 64 bit Sonar. This means some of the older Cakewalk effects and DXi like Dreamstation cannot be used in the 64 bit version of Sonar (I understand they will work in the 32 bit version running on a 64 bit OS).

People have posted a rather involved way of wrapping these old DX plugins to VST, then bridging the VST to 64 bit.

A lot of the DX effects and instruments have 64 bit versions and certainly work in Sonar 8.5 64 bit on Vista 64. The Sonitus effects are available on my system. I can't confirm that they would work on Windows 7 but I would have thought there would have been a lot of traffic here if they did not.

yes, sonitus and several of the DX FX work in win7x64.  but as Glyn said none of the 32bit DX FX or instruments will work in 64bit win7, however, I have not heard that cakewalk has any plans to fix the ones they haven't already done.  if you have heard that then you know more than I do about it.  I figured they had done all they were going to.

which ones in particular are you wanting to work?

hey your not alone..i too have compiled alot of them as well..but it might be time to start building a new library of effects that are more updated.because eventually there will be no more dx fx.i too have 30-40 of them..just buy a few at a time and download the free ones..youd be surprised how fast you collect the free ones in here.before you know it you will have an updated library of effects you can use in any 64 bit system.

I have the 64 bit OS Win 7 with Sonar installed as 32 bit and 64 bit. So are you saying that all the Sonitus DX FX work in both the 32 bit and 64 bit Sonar? So when you mention you have not heard that cakewalk has any plans to fix the ones they haven't already done. Did they make the Sonitus FX 64 bit, when installing the 64 bit Sonar? In the 64 bit Sonar are they wrapped in a VST wrapper in the background without the user being aware of that being done?

Isn't there some sort of incompatibility with DX FX and/or DXi's with Win7 64 bit? Isn't it more than just a 32 bit and 64 bit problem forcing us to eventually discard DX and DXi?

yes, the sonitus FX work in 64bit sonar, and I don't think they're wrapped in a VST, I could check on that, but I thought they had fixed them for 64bit DX, but I'm not sure of that answer.

no, DX (DirectX) is not just 32bit compatible, Microsoft released DX9.0c which made DX compatible with 64bit systems.  it's just a matter of whether the developer (cakewalk) decides to update the DX instruments/FX to a version of DX which is compatible or not.

but since the industry has moved toward VST being one of the large standards and since almost none of the other major DAW makers are using DX for their FX and instruments, cakewalk decided to focus more on VST instead of DX.
