Silent coolers, fans, boxes and power supplies
Guys, I'm about to buy another computer. It's gonna be an i7 (perhaps 2600k), loaded with RAM (I think if I buy the 2600k I'll be able to buy just 16 GB, right? I'd really like to have 24 GB), asus motherboard, 2 SATA 3 western digital hd's and some nVidea video card (nothing fancy, since it's gonna be an audio dedicated pc). I'd like some indications of silent coolers, fans, boxes and power supplies. I've been looking to some watercoolers, but the price is too high around here and I think that it's a very compliated system. And perhaps requires some maintenance skills I don't have. Thanks in advance.

I can't offer any suggestion on current models, since I have built a PC in a while but, you can find some good info here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/

jcschild Case Zalman Z9 (even its fans are not bad) Nocuta CPU cooler and case fans Coolermaster 700W silent m Pro.. Thanks Scott for this info. I just ordered three Noctura case fans and the Cooler Master 700 Silent M Pro. This info you and Jim provide about building quiet DAWs really helps so many of us. Thanks again for what you offer to this community. C2

jcschild Case Zalman Z9 (even its fans are not bad) Nocuta CPU cooler and case fans Coolermaster 700W silent m Pro.. Thanks! I found here in my country a Noctua Nh-d14 and a cooler master silent pro gold 1000W. Didn't find Zalman Z9 just the Z7 (will it work). Didn't find Noctua case fans. Any other options, please?? Look the complete specs of the system below. Old55 I can't offer any suggestion on current models, since I have built a PC in a while but, you can find some good info here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/ Thanks! I really enjoyed the site. They recomend. Serenety PC's but unfortunatelly I can't find them here in my country. The system will be: Asus P8p67 Pro Rev. 3.0 Intel Core i7 2600k (is the K version really necessary?? It's more expansive around here...) Corsair Vengeance 16 Gb (4 x4) DDR3 1600mhz Cl9 1.5v Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W Western Digital 1tb Caviar Black Sata3 Gbs 7200 rpm (x2) Noctua Nh-d14 XFX ATI Radeon HD 6870 900mhz gpu 1 Gb Gddr5 or Gygabyte GeForce Gts 450 Oc 830 mhz 1 Gb or EVGA GF GTX 560 TI superclocked 900mhz 1 Gb (which one should I buy?? As I said, not fancy about video... just plan to use 2 monitors in the future. The first one is cheaper and the salesman told me that both nVidea are more quiet) Case - Zalman Z7 Plus (any other suggestions??) Case Coolers - Found some Akasa here. Are they as silent as the noctuas?? Is everything ok?? How would it perform in terms of silence?? Thanks!

To be avoided: Zalman ZM-F3 I installed 2 of these case fans and they turned out to be quite noisy, even at the slow speed setting, despite manufacturer's claims. In contrast, some Papst fans that I installed some years ago were so silent that at first I thought they were not working.

I'm putting together a new desktop PC with all components purchased from Newegg.com. The case that I'm purchasing is a Fractal Design R3, and you may want to check that out ($109 on Newegg). It has sound dampening materials built into the sides, top, and front of the case itself. With the right fans at the right speeds, it's almost silent. http://www.fractal-design...ew=product&prod=48 I opted for 5 additional Gelid fans, since they look very much like the 2 stock Fractal Design fans that are included with the case: http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16835426015 Here's a youtube video of a case reviewer testing how quiet the case is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62O29Ty9CuE Dave

There is a current thread on the gearsultz forum about cases. I'm using an Antec "nine hundred" case. The fans are quiet. I have an XFX 750 watt power supply and it too is quiet. I can record a vocal 3 ft from the PC and there is NO PC "noise" introduced into the signal.

[jealous rant] I can't wait to update my DAW! All I have is a very old server box (dual 1.4ghz), but it has NINE fans! I can hear it from other rooms (and I have to make a voice over for a presentation this week). I usually surround myself with homemade gobos (portable laundy racks with heavy moving blankets hanging over them - ugly but effective). [/jealous rant]
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

That Noctua NH-D14 and the Corsair Vengeance have height conflict. The Vengeance heatsink is so tall that it hits the bottom two fins of the NH-D14. I have the same pairing. What I did was to take a dremel and cut off the bottom two fins on the RAM side of the NH-D14. It works well with this modification. And it did not negatively alter my CPU temps; my temps are still very cool! Good luck! C2

Thanks in advance. I ended up going for some Nexus fans since the Gelid ones I considered are now out of stock. The Nexus 120mm were recommended by silentpcreview.com, as well: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article63-page2.html http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16835610006 I like them because they'll match the stock fans that come with my Fractal Designs R3 case...
