MIDI Filter Drum Revoicing

I'm routing channel 10 from a virtual arranger keyboard to multiple Sonar tracks with the MIDI Filter plug-in. I filter everything out except the kick and snare and then revoice with a Roland 909, Session Drummer or even the TTS-1.

This works well enough for recorded midi data but I want to hear it, while I play it; before I record it.

The problem is that the Yamaha XG data doesn't correlate to the Sonar data. I've also used the MIDI Transpose plugin but I'm starting to flail so I thought I'd post and see if someone has walked this path before.

If you're going to suggest a custom drum map make sure you've done it before as reliable work around .. that's the first thing I tried ..
Sonar does have drum maps for this keyboard.

Does anyone have an expert knowlede of using midi filters to revoice drum data? I'm looking for links or a tutorial of some kind.

.. tricks that would improve the speed of finding key or note data? .. how to route the data to a VST or SD drum? .. an editing shortcut?

Thank you forum members.

I don't understand your caveat here.  if you tried this what about it didn't work?  the drum map for the XG is what you're needing, IMO.  have you worked thru the tutorials in sonar dealing with drum maps?  if not, go to the help files for the drum map tutorial.  you didn't state which version of sonar you have, older versions the drum maps were tutorial 9, IIRC and newer ones is 10 or 11, I can't remember right now.

also, I have some tutorials about advanced routing in drum maps on here:

    ... drum maps don't work in real-time .. just on pre-recorded midi ..
I'm working with an artist who wants it revoiced before it's recorded so he can choose between the 909 or SD .. uuhhg .. at least the 909 is still midi data .. let's get there first before I have to trigger individual .wav via midi ..  in real-time ..

    Sgt Rohan,
first of all, your countdown to "deliverables being due" sounds a little like you're blaming us users on the user base forum for your schedule problems.  I hope that's not the case.  We can only help as we have time to do so, not necessarily immediate response here.

second - you're right, the drum map doesn't work live real time.  my apologies for missing that earlier.  I *think* your solution is going to be a tool called "Maple MIDI Virtual Cable"

    http://www.maplemidi.com/Maple_driver.html

I'm not 100% this will work for you, but I think it will.  I had it on my older machine but I don't have it on this one to verify for you, I'll let you verify if it works or not.  maple is a virtual MIDI cable routing with very flexible routing capabilities including allowing you to route a MIDI track to multiple outputs.

I think you will also need to use MIDI filtering in conjunction with Maple in order to send only certain notes to certain outputs.  MIDI filtering is a cakewalk MIDI effect.

I hope that helps you meet your schedule.

Why in the world would I "blame" people on a forum? .. that's weird ..

no need for another plugin .. the MIDI Filter will be OK .. time consuming because of the jumbled data .. I'll ask this guy Seth Perlstein .. he'll be in LA tommorow just by coincidence .. maybe he can offer suggestions ..

FYI - the track was recorded in real-time .. all instruments and vocals recorded at the same time in 1 take .. it will be broadcast as is ..

There is a trend in the studios here to return to a more organic spontaneous recording proccess. Tools like Sonar, Reason, Acid etc make it possible to do 1 take and no overdubs with the right amount of pre-production.

I'll YouTube a tutorial of the whole 'live' proccess once I sus out this filtering thing ..

sorry to be "weird."  sometimes you can't tell from a text post what someone is trying to say.  I did say I hoped that wasn't the case.

I'm glad to have helped and hope you get the MIDI filter working to your satisfaction.
