BBE d82 Sonic Maximizer MEH!!!
It was a stupid deal @ MF for 49.95.... well 49.95 down the old toilet first of all, the authorization was old, it seems Nomad Factory handles BBE now, well after super Sherlock Holmes detective work if find the links to download the correct software and activation schemes .. as a plug in it is BLAH .. it tinkers WAY too much with the high and lo end ... no way as a mastering plug MAYBE as a channel insert on some live recorded stuff .. MAYBE Now our band uses some BBE stuff on our live PA , and I have an old BBE and Aphex rack from 20 years ago that work in a live situation. Yes I did read the snake oil comments about BBE and Aural Exciters on those other boards ,, but was temporarily insane ... DONT DO IT ...

the only thing i ever use Sonic Maximiser on (the old one) is bass, i find it works well to give that some punch. but yeah, is very much a sledgehammer of a plug...

I've found it to be useful in certain mixes but used very sparingly - around 10-20% "wet". I've never tried it on an individual track. To me it was worth $50 for something to try to clear up a problematic mix - but it's definitely not something that I find useful on all projects. I can see why you don't care for it - just thought I'd through out a different view!

BBE plugins suite from Nomad Factory are very good plugins and very accurate the orignal hardware. It work mainly as insert plugins. I would not recommend it as Master plugin over whole mix, but you can use it for that too.... http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/bbe_sonicsweet/index.html

Here is a pdf from the vendor's marketing department that explains what the BBE technology does. According to this document, it does two things. First, it adds delays to low frequencies. This is supposed to compensate for phase shifts induced by loudspeakers' reactance. Second, it boosts lows and highs (automatic "disco smile"). The obvious problem here is that they're attempting to generically "correct" or compensate for shortcomings in speakers, without knowing which speakers they're compensating for. That seems kind of silly. How do they know your (or anyone's) speakers need a bass boost? BBE says they measured a whole bunch of speakers to come up with averages to determine how much "compensation" to apply. They do not say if headphones, earbuds, car stereos, ghetto blasters, theater systems, studio nearfields, or racetrack PA horns were included in the survey.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff
