more crashes than a destruction derby!
I'm actually close to giving up with this program altogether and fighting tooth and nail to get the £300 i spent on the program back. I love how this thing works, its concept is genius. However its build is not. I have several projects in the pipeline using Sonar X1, all of which I'm very excited about finishing and have tried many times. Most i am about 10 hours work into, but out of the blue each project randomly crashes out and I'll lose 2 hours work, 4 steps forward and 3 back basically. these ten hours worth of work have taken me at least 30 hours to get to because of crashes. Even with X1a and X1b, there are still far too many crashes for my liking, even with Cubase's ridiculous complexity and clunky styling, it holds together better. when I throw over a quarter of my monthly salary away on a single piece of software, I'd expect it to at least keep running or at least actually save the recovery files it says it will save. I've yet to be able to boot a single recovery file, and i'm fresh out of hope. Is this problem just mine or is everyone suffering this same fate? The crashes always seem to occur when I forget to switch the recording track, so deselect eg. track 2's recording button and when i select track 4's for example, it tells me it's crashed and will try and save a recovery file (always to no avail) and then kicks the bucket, taking with it my hard work :(

I have a project that will open only in safe mode, unless I 'save as' then it loses its Screen Set settings randomly but it's only this one project but I cannot figure out why. Everything else seems OK. The reason I'm posting is because it's really hard to pin point some of this stuff especially as another user without any access or knowledge or your hardware configuration. I did notice in your post that you're losing 2 hours of work. I hope that has only happened one time, because to not constantly save your hard work is pretty risky and I've never had an auto backup file completely refuse to open. Just hit cntrl 'S' early and often to save your work. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help.

I've not had great luck with recovery files, but I would guess their validity would require Sonar being able to write them out in time. I stick with Larry's advice of the Ctrl-S every couple of changes. As a side note, do people use the configurable auto-save function? I like that it can be set to trigger after a number of changes or minutes, but it does take a few seconds to save good sized projects, and I'm worried it will kick in at an inopportune time (during recording). Thanks, OSD (OnScreenDisplay)

Really? You'd go 2 hours without saving? Color me paranoid (and given that I'm a software engineer - I am), but I save every ten minutes or so. And if it's a new day, I immediately save to NewFilename-xx, where xx is a new ascending number each time. (leaves an interesting historical trail... and clogs up your disk a bit... I'm up to #96 on my latest song - 4 month's part time work) Ok, that's the pragmatic side of it. My build 245 and 246 (X1b) emits horrible distortion (corrupted timing or audio buffer is my b.s. guess) after any decent series of complex midi or audio edits. So in addition to saving/renaming as often as I do, I now have to reach for the volume knob every time I hit play. Hey forgive me - just playing the part of the Persian Tow-Truck Driver here...

If it's a Firewire unit... and you're not using a TI chipset Firewire controller, that's most likely the culprit. (The reason I ask is that the issue seems to revolve around arming/disarming audio tracks.) FWIW, If you're having major stability issues with basic program features (like arming/disarming tracks), I'd suspect there's an issue aside from Sonar (hardware or config). I'd start by testing your system's RAM... then run a stress-test on the system as a whole. Once you're sure the hardware is OK, I'd start with a fresh/clean (up-to-date) OS install. - Start with a known rock-solid machine.
- Add a proven rock-solid audio interface.
- Use plugins that are known to be solid.
This is not to say that X1 is without issues... But basic features/functions should be pretty solid.

Additionally, were these projects originally created in X1? I've been fine with those, but v8 projects ported over seem to suffer the most crash-related things.

^^^ What Wicked said. For me, X1 appears to be totally stable now, but ONLY on projects started wholly within X1. Attempting to open/edit projects created in any earlier version causes X1 to fall over quite randomly.

What happens if you copy/paste the clips into a new/empty X1 project? Do you still experience the same flakey behavior?

All my issues with instability have been due to the pro channel which I now avoid like the plague. Whenever I start to use that feature towards the end of the project I get a big crash so: 1. Save every 10 mins or so and make yourself do it. 2. I always have 2 versions current: yesterdays dated and named yesterday, and todays which I keep saving as I go along. 3. Leave that Pro-channel to people that can use it stably. Use sonnitus Eg and a decent compressor. I really like the Oxford Dynamics limiter for vocals - it kicks ass! 4. But my new big secret weapon is the old VC Vintage plugin. The de-esser beats Waves IMO and really does work really well. The VX64 is a cpu hog on my system and might be good for modern RnB but not the folk music I make! 5. Did I mention save every 10 mins? Best

What happens if you copy/paste the clips into a new/empty X1 project? Do you still experience the same flakey behavior? To be perfectly honest Jim, I've not tried that. The other suggestion I read about but it didn't work for me was to open up 8.5 (and older) projects in safe mode within X1 and re-enable the plugins one at a time. I tried this one with one particular project, but no luck.

Is there a way to tell Sonar XI to autosave every 10 minutes? Or even autosave a recovery file somewhere? Adobe Creative Suite does this for me.

This is BS, I asked for help here on the forums and was told basically to just not use the very feature I purchased the software for. I feel you pain. Good luck!!!

I've never seen SONAR crash from enabling or disabling a track for recording. I would suggest calling or emailing our tech support department. There may be something wrong with your system that they can help with. SP
