snap end of groove clip

When I drag out or change the length of a groove clip, how can I get the end point to snap to the grid?

Thanks
Mark

I don't believe that you can get the end point of a groove clip to snap to the grid settings. The snap settings will let you move the whole loop either by - or to - the amount you set in the snap settings, but if you slip edit the end of the loop and change its length like you say, (or even slip edit the front of the loop), the snap settings don't apply.

    Thanks.
So it's not possible to drag out a groove clip to exact multiples of clip length, like you do in Acid? For example, if you want to drag out a groove clip to loop four times exactly, how do you do that?

No, that is not true you can get it to snap. Set the snap to whole or Measure. Make sure you click at the end where you want it to stop. Now it is not a hard snap. However, when you stop at the end you can push beyond that if you want. Try my example. It should work. Let me know if you want me to shown you how it should look.

A groove clip has rounded corners that let you know where it ends. All you have to do is roll out the clip to as many measures you want and just be sure to have the rounded corners stop at the measure you want. It sounds harder then it is. It really is not that big of a deal.

Thanks. I know about the rounded corners. Just looking at them, it's impossible to tell whether or not you're at an exact measure - whether you're looking at a fully rounded corner or you're only halfway there.

I thought I'd try an Acid-like project in Sonar but this issue is making it difficult.

doriginal, I'm not quite sure what you're doing. Could you elaborate a bit please?

    Thanks
    Mark

Oh. I've just opened 8.5 and tried it there - snap for the ends of groove clips is very definitely working in 8.5.

just go up to the snap module in your cantrol bar...set it for measure...then when you drag it...it will snap to one measure at a time..(you can set it to what ever you want)now if you start dragging it and it wont repeat itself...then its not a grove clip..all you have to do is right click it..then select "groove clip looping"..after you turn it into a grove clip you can double click on it to open up the loop constructor, there you can save it to your own files(i figured i just tell you about this cause its so cool)once you save it you can start your own library of grrove clips..even with your own wave files that you make up.really easy to write songs this way.

Thanks chuckbaby, but for some reason it's not working. I have Snap To on and blue, Measure on and blue, but no luck. The start of the clip will snap as expected if I move it, but the end of the clip doesn't snap at all if I try to drag it out. This is the same for acidized wav files and rx2.

Is there another setting I could be missing?

Go to Snap and Nudge Preferences, and set Magnetic Strength to Off.

Sure thing. For reference, snapping clip edges with Magnetic Strength enabled works fine, but it makes the snap range around the grid lines smaller, so you have to be closer to the target - High gives you the widest magnetic "field", but Off is counter-intuitively more like "Infinite" Magnetic Strength.

If you don't need to be able to drag objects to points in between snap grid lines, just leave Magnetic Strength Off, and everything will snap from one grid line to the next as your mouse pointer passes the midway point between them.

Saved me too. I need to make a couple of quick loop pieces.
    Now I don't need Acid.

Strange that I still can't get clip ends to snap at all with Magnetic Strength enabled on any of the settings. Only turning it off works.

    Thanks again.

Ah...I also had magnetic strength set to "medium" (which seems to be the default settings as I have never changed it AFAIK) and the snap settings had no influence at all on the end of the groove clip. Turning magnetic strength off however, did make the snap settings work.

Thanks, dlesaux! Glad to hear you're finding the book useful.

I think that tip is at the beginning of Chapter 6 (Editing and Processing), right?
