Simple MIDI Setup Question

Something is very different between my old Sonar setup and X1.  Maybe someone can point me to a simple solution to get the old behavior back.

OLD (Desired):  Whichever MIDI track I selected would respond to input from a MIDI keyboard.  Channel did not matter.  This was the easiest means from recording one track after another from the same MIDI device without changing the channel transmitted.

NEW (Not desired):  All MIDI tracks respond to MIDI input fromt he controller.  This creates a mess.

OLD (Desired): Channel number shown in event list did not matter.  All output was directed (channelized) to whatever MIDI channel was set for the track.

New (Not desired): Channel number transmitted by controller and recorded as shown in event list seems to matter.

Problem here is that I had an ancient version of Sonar used only to control MIDI sent to an external record, so I have no memory of how I set things up way back then.

Thanks.

you can still select a channel to pass your midi signal through by clicking input echo.just remember to shut it off when using the next midid track..so instead of selecting tracks like before now you just click the input echo icon.
though im sure the old way seemed more effective as times change and programs become more complex the more you exspect out of them the more things change.
and most of the time change is for the better.as im sure youve noticed there are things this program can do that your old version wouldnt be able to hang with

    Windows 8.1 X64 Sonar Platinum x64

Something strange I noticed last night.  I was working on a new song and noticed that when I added another instrument (at this point just piano and bass) that I was hearing all MIDI tracks respond to the controller.  I went through the MIDI routing stuff and couldn't get it to isolate just one instrument.  I even muted both instrument tracks.  I was still getting sound from the piano.

Then I noticed that I had not removed the default MIDI and Audio tracks that the default template always loads.  I deleted the MIDI one and sure enough the piano stopped playing.  Unmuted the other two instruments and all was well.

I never noticed it before because I usually have my own custom template load first (or at least delete the two default tracks) but I was in a hurry to get an idea down.

Sounds good, guys.  No problem here changing to more complex SW--just need to get comfortable with it.

As complex as X1 is, it is actually much easier to do MIDI, audio, VIs, and processing all in one place instead of using an external recorder.

X1 still works this way. There is a setting in Preference > MIDI > Playback and Recording  to Always Echo Current MIDI Track that is enabled by default. Make sure that is on, and that all your Input Echo button on MIDI tracks are disabled. Then only the highlighted track will echo MIDI input to its assigned synth. If you don't set a specific input channel, the synth for that track will respond to any channel sent by your controller.

Thank you.  This will help productivity.

And do I need to do anything to channelize?  By that I mean, it shouldn't matter that a track is full of MIDI channel 3 events, for example, if the track is set to output to channel 4, correct?

Right. No matter what's in the track, or what comes in the input live from your controller, the "forced" output channel will re-channel everything.
