Signal Routing quesion

Is there a way to have a VST compressor to compress the siganl before it gets recorded? I have a vocalist that with so much fluctuation in dynamic range that it's hard to keep clipping from occurring. I've tried a send and return and insert and I'm still getting cliping on the recorded take.

Thanks guys.

I think I got it as an insert effect...which should be the correct method...right? I seem to be able to control the clipping. I guess my problem is not understand the difference between the S/R and insert and how these effect the signal.

You will have problems if the comp doesn't come before the converters.  VST comps, by nature, come after the converter.  What you need is a preamp w/ lots of headroom, back the artist off and crank the volume.  Distance = natural compression.  I've had singers distort the mic itself if you get too close (PZM, but still ...).  Or a comp between the preamp and converter.

A software comp can't level out the sound, of course, but only useful if you don't distort.  If you got it working, more power to you.  That is what engineering is all about :-)

I see. We seem to have managed to get a decent recording with no clipping...most of the problem was that the vocalist isn't use to recording. With so much change in the dynamics I thought "it would be great if I could get the compressor to work before the recording" Thanks for the info.

If you're recording to 24-bit just back off your input gain so you don't clip prior to the A/D conversion. Otherwise you'll need a hardware compressor to catch it there.

But you said you were able to get something, so keep on rockin'!
