Guitar mixing techniques

I laid down some guitar tracks yesterday using Guitar Rig 4, and the guitar sound almost sounds like it's overloading..too much gain it seemed. I lowered the gain a bit and tried some different EQing and couldn't get rid of that overloading staticey sound. My input's and outputs in GR4 are not clipping, and the track is sitting just between -12 and -6db.  I have tried a few different EQ tools to see if it can get rid of that "overloaded / too much gain" sound but no luck.  I used Trident A, EQ gliss and sonitusFX with no luck either..

Obviously garbage in will be garbage out, and you can only polish garbage to a certain extent..but I am just not sure where I can eliminate some frequencies to ease it up a bit.  Any ideas on what guitar frequencies I can roll off to get rid of that harsh overloaded sound?

Specs:

Intel I7 930 quad core
8gb ram
Profire 2626 for input
Sonar X1
Guitar Rig 4 vst

If you turn off or disable GR4.  Is your raw recording from the DI clean?

Yes it is. When GR4 is disabled, the track is clean.

Whats the CPU like when it's running? Could you be pushing the CPU with having GR4 and other plugins enabled?

In GR4, if you drop the level of drive/gain (on the amp model), does the sound clean up (as expected)?
Make sure you're not clipping the A/D converters (check the meters on the 2626)

In short, check all gain staging.

You might even try using  > Process > audio  > gain and literally pull back on the amplitude energy feeding the plug-in. Try 6 db gain reduction... if it helps, you might be on the right track. It may act similar to pulling back on the volume a bit using the guitars volume pot.

Like Jim Says check all gain staging.

Just hit the Learn button on the input section of GR and it will auto adjust the incoming volume.

how hot did you record these levels?and did the y sound fine when you were doing the overdub of the second guitar track?..if the levels look good..and the it sounded fine before..or good at one point it could be a sound card adjustment..this is also taking in consideration there are other tracks that sound fine..if there are other tracks thats sound fine then you can rule out a driver/soundcard issue.if this is the case there maybe very little you can do to help your situation if they were recorded hot levels...try doing some random test..record a dummy track w/a lower level to see if this cures your problem.

CPU and memory is definitely not an issue as it's barely being taxed by the program on my box. There is no clipping at the time of recording, and the profire 2626 is not overloading either. Gain reduction on the amp model within GR4 just drops the distortion level to one that doesn't work for me.. but, again, GR4 is not clipping either.
I did change some EQ settings and it seemed to clean it up a bit.. there was a lot of muddy low end which seemed to be distorting it. Inside GR4, I lowered the volume of the EQ, and raised the volume of the amp to compensate and it worked well. Only thing left is to clean up the bass sound and I should be good to go.  I am obviously not going to get a mesa boogie sound out of GR4..

Which amp are you using? Which speaker cab? Which mic? Have you tried the studio console instead of a basic cab?
